Aidan Knights

Past Notes

June 5th, 2018

Aidan worked on vocals today. We talked about technique, such as good support, and what that means. I showed him the book system of singing with a heavy book on your abdomen.

We did some ear discovery, and he started off having difficulty finding notes, but improved as we continued.

We did some half-scale excercises to warm up, and then I had him sing a song to listen to his vowels.

We talked about dipthongs, and how to sing them, and practiced that a few times.

I recommended singing with a tuner, to practice holding a note, and reminded him that air is key.

We talked about counting, and listening for where beat one is so that the first chord is played on every bar, and then you can play lead in between the other beats.

We then learned a common 12-bar blues chord pattern - I wrote it out for him, and talked about how to play the blues scale in E, and also in E minor, with the added "blues note" added into the scale.

April 14th, 2016

We continued with the relationship between chords, and I showed him the "home row" system of playing leads from the "A shape" bar chords.

We started with the pentatonic (5 note) scale used in very traditional music as well as blues, rock, etc.

We fleshed it in by adding the western notes (I didn't explain leading tones). He did a trial lead while I played chords from the key he was in.

April 7th, 2016

We reviewed the relationships between the chords on the neck, and I explained again how the scale (do re me fa so la te) can be played as chords 1 2 3 4 5 6.

1 4 and 5 are major
2 3 and 6 are minor

We looked at the other position using the A string as the 1 chord as well.

We then played Great Big Sea When I'm Up I Can't Get Down as an example song to using this system.

March 31st, 2016

We talked through what he wanted to learn, as well as what he already knew.

I showed Aidan the circle of fifths:

I asked him to work on memorizing it.

I introduced him to some basic fret logic-- the way the chords of the major scale in any key can be played on the neck.

I have him a challenge to learn the chord system starting with the A shape chords on the A string.
