Lauren Hunt
Past Notes
November 19th, 2024
Today was Lauren's last lesson. We played through:
Last Night
24K Magic
Beautiful Things
Heat Waves
Everybody (Backstreet's Back)
Uptown Funk
November 12th, 2024
We reviewed some of Lauren's favourite songs in the lesson today.
I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,
Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)
Can't Hide Red
Glass Animals
Beautiful Things
November 5th, 2024
Lauren played through Lonely Road, and then we added a new one... here's the drum tutorial for Taylor Swift, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart:
https://youtu.be/u1KjR2ac-_Y
We couldn't find a better video for it - but it's someplace to start.
October 29th, 2024
Lauren played Chicken Fried first - she didn't really get the drum rolls right, but we moved on, and added MGK, Jelly Roll Lonely Road
https://youtu.be/wI5FI45krHA
Here's some music:
https://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/mgk-jelly-roll-lonely-road-drum-tab-s683096
October 22nd, 2024
Lauren played through Wagon Wheel and then we added Chicken Fried by the Zach Brown Band:
https://youtu.be/4TT-ImTHpdU
This has some hard buzz-fills in it... have fun!
October 15th, 2024
Lauren did very well on Last Night by Morgan Wallen.
She wanted to add Darius Rucker, Wagon Wheel. A fun song, but no drum music for it that we could find. She tried playing along with this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0k20TlKjFE
It's a swing, so be conscious of not playing it as straight eighths. Relax your hand and arm and even take out the extra high hat notes to keep it in time.
October 8th, 2024
Lauren played through Bad Guy - not all of the little things we talked about were fixed, but it was pretty good.
We added another Morgan Wallen song, called Last Night:
https://youtu.be/D__Umh27BD4
This is pretty repetitive, but requires watching the quarter notes carefully or she'll play the kick the same every time.
October 1st, 2024
We went over 24K Magic - it was a hard one, so don't feel too bad about it. I thought you'd have trouble with the intricacies of the sixteenth kicks etc.
We added a new one, by Billie Eilish, Bad Guy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HRaWft3KdE
September 24th, 2024
Lauren is away this week.
September 17th, 2024
Great job on Natural, a solid 8/10.
We added a new song, 24K Magic by Bruno Mars - the big challenge will be to play those sixteenth kicks fast enough. They should match the speed of the high hats, so watch that they line up.
September 10th, 2024
Lauren played through Wake Up, and we tried to focus on a few places where she was making mistakes. After a bit she decided to just move on.
We tried adding Lonely Road, but settled on Natural, also by Imagine Dragons.
September 3rd, 2024
We added a new song, Imagine Dragons, Wake Up:
https://youtu.be/zTAt6l8tg9I
Here's the rhythm beats:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp4flocUmxM
June 25th, 2024
For today's lesson we decided to just play through a bunch of Lauren's favourites. We did Billie Jean, Faded, Unholy, The Drum
June 18th, 2024
We went over Follow You - it was as good as Lauren's songs usually are, but it is a tricky one.
We added a new one by Post Malone, I Had Some Help
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSyHHzKgJyQ
This is a fun one - don't forget the kicks in the fills. :)
June 11th, 2024
We added a new song, Imagine Dragons, Follow You.
This has got a challenging kick part, but not hard- just takes watching carefully and some practise.
The drum fill near the end is much harder. There are two places actually, nearly the same fill... very fast. Good luck! Practise it at a slower speed so you can learn it, then speed up later.
June 4th, 2024
Good job on Lose Control. It's a tricky one, and you did quite well!
We added a new one today, by Benson Boone, Slow It Down:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBtlkpjy_aA
This is pretty easy really. 4/10 There's one spot with a weird fill near the end which is probably the only thing you really need to focus on to get this song a high mark. b
May 28th, 2024
We reviewed Beautiful Things - Lauren did pretty well at it, considering it's as hard as it is. There were some accuracy issues, which just would take some focus of playing things on EXACTLY the right beat. It was just a tad fuzzy, so 7/10.
We then added Teddy Swims, Lose Control, which is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No4FUT1ecO8
High-hat opens are notated differently, so watch for that. Try to get the sixteenth kicks accurate. This may be the hardest part of the this song for you.
May 21st, 2024
Lauren played through Can't Feel My Face, and did quite well on it.
We then added Benson Boone, Beautiful Things:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M21PQ2reeQg&t=100s
The 12/8 part after the intro is the hardest part of the song.... be sure to focus on the kick and the ride cymbal, as both change a bit beyond expectations.
May 14th, 2024
Lauren is away this week.
May 7th, 2024
Lauren will be away next week.
We reviewed Sweet Child of Mine - she nailed the side shot part in the song, but forgot about the fills that had kicks between the crashes on beats 3 and 4.
We then went over Heat Waves - it wasn't as good as she usually does.
We tried adding a few, and settled on one she might have done before:
The Weeknd, Can't Feel My Face:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aieFH9ODJGU
April 30th, 2024
We'll leave the grade at 8/10 for Sharks. So close to a perfect score!!
We reviewed Sweet Child of Mine - there were two problems - the fills and the side-shot / stick part. We'll work on them one more week.
We then added Heat Waves by Glass Animals:
https://youtu.be/QOnl0PW6ly8
Feel free to use two hands on the high-hat sixteenths, just be sure to make both hands sound exactly the same. Hit the same spot on the hat, and use the same amount of strength.
April 23rd, 2024
We're going to work on Sharks one more week, to work on the ride cymbal moving between the flat and the bell. I gave her 8/10 but if she gets that right, it's an easy 10/10.
We then added Guns N Roses, Sweet Child of Mine (which we've done a long time ago) to make use of DrumMate
https://youtu.be/kuZlzty5DaQ
April 16th, 2024
We started out with reviewing Creep again. At 100% Lauren wasn't quite getting the sixteenth kicks with the eighth hihat and ride, but when we slowed it down she did very good on it.
We then added Imagine Dragons, Sharks:
https://youtu.be/bGppKuwmvB0
https://youtu.be/jPVlexnaD6Q
April 9th, 2024
We continued working on Creep. Lauren had forgotten about the eighth note / sixteenth note issue, so had practised it wrong. We went over it again at 75% speed to try to help her play it correctly. She was getting it, so I hope she's able to remember to work on it correctly this week! :)
April 2nd, 2024
Good job mostly on What I've Done - the kick wasn't right but everything else was pretty close.
Lauren wanted to add Creep by Radiohead next, here's the link:
https://youtu.be/DodEexEGFp0
Watch the eighth on ride and hat, with the sixteenths on the kick. This will take some work!
March 26th, 2024
We started off recording for Ethan's song, and then added a new one:
Linkin Park, What I've Done
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENfT6wm0d8A
March 19th, 2024
Lauren played through Everybody for me - great job! 9/10!
We then added Rocket Man by Elton John so she can record on Ethan's recording.
Here's the drum cover with sheet music:
https://youtu.be/N-F4dJPy3HU
March 12th, 2024
Lauren played Numb through me twice, and then we added Backstreet Boys, Everybody:
https://youtu.be/sIl5ztzVj2s
We stopped and worked out a few of the fills. It's a fun one!
March 5th, 2024
Lauren played through Uptown Funk for me. A few small mistakes, which if she fixed would make this a perfect score. Very close!
We then added Linkin Park, Numb:
https://youtu.be/TtJm8EwepzA
This is very hard, partly because the first snare of each bar is not on beat 2, but the ah of beat one.
February 27th, 2024
We reviewed One More Night and Hall of Fame, then looked for a new song. First we tried Good 4 U by Olivia Rodrigo, but it was a tad hard. We then decided to revisit Mark Ronson, Uptown Funk: https://youtu.be/SSQg-jrD3yA since we did it years ago before we started using sheet music.
Watch carefully that that snare-kick-snare-kick-snare-kick fill isn't backwards. Snare starts on beat 1.
February 20th, 2024
We started with a review of One More Night. Those sixteenth notes on the kick are still not quite right, so something to hopefully focus on this week. What how he plays the first of the two kicks with his toe, maybe that will help you.
We then went on to Hall of Fame. This is another /very/ hard song. The sixteenths on the kick will take a lot of work to get right.
February 13th, 2024
Last week's song was pretty hard. We slowed it down to 75, and got it up to 85, but the kick beat wasn't quite right (the second set of sixteenths especially). The highhat also didn't stay consistent through the whole bar of the beat.
We did it three or four times, and then added Hall of Fame by The Script:
https://youtu.be/_WFKTnQHOaE
This is rated as a 4/5 on difficulty on Drum Mate. It's got the same sixteenth and eighth note combination that The Drum had, so will take a lot of work to get right.
February 6th, 2024
Good job on The Drum! That's a hard one!
We added Maroon 5, One More Night:
https://youtu.be/20Rhq4Thu5A
Try learning this at 50% and 75% to get used to the kicks with the 16th high hats.
January 30th, 2024
Lauren had drips put in her eyes today so is cancelling.
January 23rd, 2024
We started out with going over "The Spectre" twice. The first time was good, but the second time was better.
We then added "The Drum" also by Alan Walker.
https://youtu.be/iTKVbzwtGC8
January 16th, 2024
Anti Hero was hard - maybe too hard for now, but a great attempt! Perhaps in the future we can come back to it?
We added a new one, Alan Walker, The Spectre:
https://youtu.be/QaeYa9YuEH8
A fun one, with lots of entertaining drum parts!!
January 9th, 2024
Cancelled because of snow.
January 2nd, 2024
Lauren played through You Belong With Me to start off, and it had some good parts, but it wasn't the typically good playing I expect from Lauren. :)
We then added a new one, Anti Hero by Taylor Swift:
https://youtu.be/Amue4psm_0A
December 19th, 2023
We continued working through You Belong With Me - really impressive beginning, but the fills and some of the harder patterns need work. We agreed to work on it for two more weeks.
Merry Christmas! Have a wonderful holiday!
December 12th, 2023
I'm totally blown away by how well Lauren has done on Enter Sandman. It wasn't perfect, but many of the hard parts were perfect. The ending wasn't very good, and the bridge had some mistakes in it - tempting to give her an 8, but I decided to give a 9 since it is such a hard song.
The next song is Taylor Swift, You Belong With Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPZ2kn-ipgU
December 5th, 2023
Lauren played through Fix You for me - a hard one, and she almost had it!
She decided to add a new hard one, Enter Sandman by Metallica: https://youtu.be/KpmGz0xZ4S4
This requires a lot of reading to get a high mark - watch that you're playing the right tom tom and that your kick is present (and playing on the right beat) for each section.
GOOD LUCK!
November 28th, 2023
We started with going over "the Scientist" by Coldplay. Good job! 9/10.
We then reviewed Passenger, "Let Her Go" - Great job, 9.5/10
We added Coldplay, Fix You: https://youtu.be/CjNNDnCFvbs
This is a tricky one! I gave it a difficulty of 8/10 -- good luck!
November 21st, 2023
Great job on Yellow, Lauren! That's a 9/10! Almost no mistakes! Very good.
We added another Coldplay song, called The Scientist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wgOzA90qs4
This has a very similar drum beat. To get perfect scores, play those drum fills exactly right.
We had extra time, so I suggested Passenger, Let Her Go:
https://youtu.be/SdvnKHbHMVA
November 14th, 2023
Lauren played Dance the Night for me, and did really well. She had a couple of fills backwards, but when going over them intentionally, she was able to play them correctly.
We added Coldplay, Yellow next:
https://youtu.be/Ssz69tFTS7Y
This is a 4/10 in difficulty, so Lauren should have no problem getting a 9 or 10 on it.
November 7th, 2023
Lauren did very well on Unholy, considering how hard it is. I gave it an 8/10 on hardness, and her mark as a 7/10. So good job.
We tried to find a new song, and finally settled on Dance the Night by Dua Lipa:
https://youtu.be/Ke34Wgxhj18
This is pretty easy, with a hardness rating of 4/10 (in my opinion). No reason she shouldn't be able to get a 9 or a 10 on this one.
October 24th, 2023
Great job on Flowers! I'm giving you an 8/10, get the ending to make it a 9, and get the accented high-hats to get a 10/10.
We then added Sam Smith, Unholy:
https://youtu.be/Hj1n-daKaKY
October 10th, 2023
We worked on the drum beats for the first half, and then added Miley Cyrus, Flowers:
https://youtu.be/HfQdwrPBn9c
This isn't too hard - it's a fun one. Watch the beginning of the chorus, where there's no beat on one
October 3rd, 2023
Lauren played through Bring Me to Life, and did pretty good - it's a VERY hard song, and I think she did well considering how hard it is.
We then went through the drum beats video. 22 Common Drum Beats:
https://youtu.be/5acGxguFiyo?list=PLVR4Pzl5lJZ114koesAVMgpqpH0V8GO2x
She did well right up until the Eighth Note Feel one (11). I asked her to work on it with just the kick and snare for this week, and we'd add high hat next week.
September 19th, 2023
For the 22 Common Drum Beats:
Work on Jazz 7, Eighth Note Feel 11, Show Two 12, Quarter Note Feel 14, Motown 15
We added a new song,
Evanescence, Bring Me to Life:
https://youtu.be/OrcoScMYRrQ
Here's an easier version in case that's too hard:
https://youtu.be/uFtuG1nhGsk
This is /very hard/, so will take a lot of work to get it right like the recording.
September 12th, 2023
Amazing job on Faded. That was wonderful.
22 Common Drum Beats:
https://youtu.be/5acGxguFiyo?list=PLVR4Pzl5lJZ114koesAVMgpqpH0V8GO2x
Dance Monkey:
https://youtu.be/EAmgEaQ3fCk
September 5th, 2023
Great job on Mike Perry, Ocean. Only three mistakes that I heard - fills just a little off (not a big deal).
Need You Now has some challenging up-beat crashes etc., that weren't exactly right, or kinda missed, but overall really good!
Free Fallin' was almost perfect - great job!
Wannabe needs a bit of work, so we decided to add another week to it.
We also added Alan Walker, Faded:
https://youtu.be/XGbkorIV8_c
June 27th, 2023
Amazing job on Attention! Only one mistake that I heard, awesome!
We added a few to work on over the summer:
Free Falling, Wannabe, Ocean, Need You Now
June 20th, 2023
We spent all of the lesson on Charlie Puth, Attention, focusing on the fills. We did them one at time, working them out phrase by phrase. Do this at home at slow speeds to get the fills nailed.
June 13th, 2023
We finished off Hysteria. It had lots of mistakes and missing parts so I only gave it a 6/10.
Next on the list: Charlie Puth, Attention. This one is totally within your abilities. Please spend the extra time looping and working on the fills so you can get them right. :) No faking! :)
May 30th, 2023
We finished off with My Happy Ending, and added a new one, Def Leppard, Hysteria:
https://youtu.be/JE6HEqLYTUs
It's got some hard parts and some easy parts... especially try to nail all those up-beat crashes -- they're FUN!
May 23rd, 2023
I'm really impressed with how well you did on Hotel California Lauren! Almost perfect... just a few fills that weren't quite right.
We added Avril Lagigne, My Happy Ending
https://youtu.be/huvhTzuHyO8
A complicated song with lots of challenging reading! We slowed it down to 75% to make it a bit easier for lesson time.
May 16th, 2023
Lauren has an appointment booked in this slot.
May 9th, 2023
I forgot to take notes for Lauren on Tuesday. Hopefully I can remember what we did.
We started with going over Zombie and Hotel California. I think it was much better, however if I remember correctly, there was something small she was doing wrong with the kick on one of those songs.
I can't remember if we added another song, I'm sorry!
May 2nd, 2023
Cranberries, Zombie:
https://www.looper.tube/?v=RGI-Qd88KR4&spd=0.8
Eagles, Hotel California
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFSqzXfavdg
April 25th, 2023
Lauren is doing well with the note reading! The quarter-note triplets were a bit of a problem in level 10 of this video, so she's going to work more on them this week:
https://youtu.be/DDCtfOntmTE
We then continued with Zombie.
Work on the song at 75% speed, and work your way up as you get better at the fills.
Don't forget the accents on the high hat.
April 18th, 2023
Great job on the reading and on Sunflower.
Work on number 7 of both, and 10 of the last one in reading.
Here's the link to Cranberries Zombie:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGI-Qd88KR4
Fun!!
April 11th, 2023
Great job on geting As It Was up to 90%!
Also did really well on the reading! Level 7 had a lot of mistakes, so try that a bit more, and see if you can get that perfect!
Next song:
Post Malone, Sunflower:
https://youtu.be/vjX4Ve8yXgc
Here's another rhythm learning video:
https://youtu.be/DDCtfOntmTE
Great job!
April 4th, 2023
We went through Stayin' Alive and As It Was, and then the sight reading. Lauren did really well until about level 8, so that will be the next chunk to work through.
I also asked her to get As It Was up a bit faster if possible, and maybe find a new song to work on.
March 28th, 2023
Lauren is sick today. :(
March 21st, 2023
Get the hi tom right in The Bee Gees, Stayin' Alive:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Fza2ZuRLE
At a slower speed, get the fills right in Harry Styles, As It Was:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdS3jI5gXVY
Keep working on the reading exercises:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVR4Pzl5lJZ114koesAVMgpqpH0V8GO2x
Try that level 10 one, to get excellent past level 6 and 7, maybe right up to 10.
The intermediate is almost perfect!
March 7th, 2023
Lauren did really well on Animal. A few mistakes, and it took a few bars to get into the right kick, but then she did much better.
We then added two new songs (since I'm gone for a week).
The first one is The Bee Gees, Stayin' Alive:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Fza2ZuRLE
The second is Harry Styles, As It Was:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdS3jI5gXVY
You can also work on the reading exercises until I'm back:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVR4Pzl5lJZ114koesAVMgpqpH0V8GO2x
February 28th, 2023
Looper Tube:
https://www.looper.tube/?v=fWZGAFrutg0&s=0.2&e=264&spd=0.75
The above site lets you set various speeds, and just loop over parts (like, say, a fill you're trying to learn).
We'll work on Animal for another week to see if you can get all the extra parts learned. :)
Start at 75%, then using looper, gradually increase the speed as you get better at the fills etc.
February 21st, 2023
Lauren was away all week so only had one day to practice. We went over Billy Jean together, and then moved on to work through Animal.
Considering she hadn't practised, she did a good job on the reading! Don't forget the ride cymbal thing on the "and" of four, and don't match the kick with it.
See you next week.
February 14th, 2023
Lauren struggled a bit with reading Billy Jean correctly, so I asked her to work on it another week.
We then added a new one she'd picked:
Def Leppard, Animal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWZGAFrutg0
Lots of reading necessary, so make sure you work hard to getting the parts right.
February 7th, 2023
Today we did Billy Jean, this is the easier version:
https://youtu.be/F3lehTwTOwc
January 31st, 2023
Today we reviewed Stay, and gradually sped it up to 85%.
Then we added Dynamite by BTS:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B0TPBGByw4&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
January 24th, 2023
Rolling in the Deep was good. We then added a Justin Bieber song called Stay, and worked on reading.
Here's the new reading sheet:
https://youtu.be/Qp4flocUmxM
Stay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0Mim0OCY5I
January 17th, 2023
Great job working through the hard stuff today! We went over Rolling in the Deep, and tried to nail down some of the parts that Lauren had missed while practising this week.
January 10th, 2023
Great job on the note reading this week. Intermediate is coming so well!
We added Rolling in the Deep by Adele
https://youtu.be/iIi9glOjygk
Great job, keep it up!
January 3rd, 2023
We went over the beginner and intermediate reading. Excellent job! Try to perfect it all this week, especially Intermediate level 3.
We then went through Lucky Strike. Excellent job! If you want to perfect it, work on the bridge.
We then added a new song, Rachel Platten, Fight Song:
https://youtu.be/nGJpPio2-2Y
Great job today!
December 27th, 2022
Lauren won't be coming on the 27th.
December 20th, 2022
Great job! Keep working on the reading intermediate and beginner stuff. Also, keep refining Lucky Strike.
December 13th, 2022
Good job on the reading exercises, and Lucky Strike!
Here's the next level of drumming practice:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF0DqJVwYQg
See you next week!
December 6th, 2022
We continued with reading notes today, focusing on the Beginner video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ssC7VfkQWE
November 29th, 2022
Here are two drum sheet music exercises that should help with note and rhythm reading:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIMQya8u6Qc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ssC7VfkQWE
Also keep working on Lucky Strike.
November 22nd, 2022
Great job on Can't Feel My Face! You had almost all the fills down, which is awesome! Watch the fills where it's snare or tom-- the notes are close to each other so you have to really watch.
Here's the new song, Maroon 5, Lucky Strike,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O97x0BDLvag&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
I printed a drum sheet out for her with the various notes on it connected to the drum kit.
November 15th, 2022
Lauren worked on Treasure this week, and other than kind of "approximating" the fills, it was good... I would love it if you really worked on getting the fills right each week, as that's a sign of real work on a song.
She went ahead and added Can't Feel My Face by The Weeknd this week
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aieFH9ODJGU&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
Good job tonight! Work on getting those fills exactly right by reading them.
November 8th, 2022
Lauren is staying home because her dad has COVID.
November 1st, 2022
We reviewed Get Lucky, and she mostly got the fills. Good job! Only a few mis-reads here and there.
We then continued with Treasure, by Bruno Mars which we introduced last week.
It has some new rhythm ideas that we haven't encountered before, especially the kick hat snare hat groove. We focused on learning this for most of the lesson.
See if you can work through that for this week, and we'll add something new for next week.
October 25th, 2022
Lauren said she didn't have much time this week to practice so we went through the song a few times so she could work out the fills. I asked her to nail it for next week! :)
She wasn't sure she wanted to, so I'll leave it up to her-- I think she can do it if she puts her mind to it!
Here's the next song, Bruno Mars, Treasure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85HxIFxj9Xk
October 18th, 2022
Amazing job on Fat Lip!!! So well.
Now see if you can read these fills! :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1NiwohhJsw&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
October 11th, 2022
Lauren will work on Fat Lip one more week:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkR0JtYP89k&ab_channel=MightyMouseDex
We also added a new song, Kenny Loggins, Footloose:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkoaCWB7zkM&ab_channel=AnnaliaDuranti
This is a fun one by Analia Duranti, with drum music on it! Watch those parts, as it's a HARD song to just guess at. :)
See you next week!
October 4th, 2022
Lauren did much better on When She Says Baby. It's amazing what practising can do! ;-)
After that we added a Sum 41 song, Fat Lip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkR0JtYP89k&ab_channel=MightyMouseDex
Again, she's picked a song without sheet music notation for drums, but it's a little easier that this is done by a little boy.
Here is the song with notation, but unfortunately not the actual song playing along:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSc0NN2YhuE&ab_channel=DrumScoreWorld
I recommend playing with this to learn the actual parts.
We finished the lesson with her just working through it! :
September 27th, 2022
I missed taking notes for Lauren last week somehow. I asked her to work on Closer and get those extra kicks and other parts worked out. She did very well on this today, although not absolutely perfect, as the extra kicks in the verses were still missing.
Another new song from last week was Jason Aldean called When She Says Baby:

We went through it a few times as she hadn't practised this one. See if you can get it worked out for next week.

September 13th, 2022
Lauren did pretty well on God's Country! The kick was closer, though not quite right but we moved on to Closer, by Chainsmokers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed9mYhaAgss
This one has some unusual things to keep an eye on... the hat opens on 1, and closes on 1 and, which is unuusal... also, the crash is paired with the snare quite a bit, WITHOUT a kick, so watch for that.
September 6th, 2022
Lauren did a great job on Eye of the Tiger, and then we added God's Country by Blake Shelton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ee8tW4_ipg&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
Also work on playing one thing with the ride and another thing with the kick.
August 30th, 2022
August 23rd, 2022
August 16th, 2022
We gave up on Slippin' On Fire, and instead added Eye of the Tiger, which has sheet music. This makes it so much easier for her.
Survivor, Eye of the Tiger:

August 9th, 2022
Lauren didn't get the kicks quite right from our lesson last week, so she's going to work on Bones by Imagine Dragons one more week.
She also wanted to learn Florida Georgia Line, Sippin' on Fire:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOsGyWCelL0& ab_channel=MattOney
The snare is like a highhat at the beginning. Also he adds in sixteenths by just joining the left hand to the right hand, which keeps on the eighth notes.
August 2nd, 2022
We reviewed the last few songs from before vacation.
Here's the next song:

On holidays
June 28th, 2022
This is the last lesson for the year, until the summer schedule. I'm taking a couple of weeks off for the summer to relax and have a bit of a different routine. I haven't set up my summer schedule yet, so watch for an email about that.
We went over This Is Me about three times, it's getting close! Work on it some more until the next lesson.
We also added a George Jones song, "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbMFSd3foC0&ab_channel=JoeyMcNew-%28Drummer%29
A fun one! In memory of her grandpa! <3
June 21st, 2022
Lauren and I worked through The Greatest Showman some more... it's a hard one with lots of really challenging parts. Be sure to spend lots of times working on it this week!
June 14th, 2022
We started with going over Moves Like Jagger, and then added a new one from Drummate. The son is called This Is Me, from The Greatest Showman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAa4UUFYiqk

Lauren is not coming in for lessons today because her grandpa has passed.
May 31st, 2022
Lauren first played through Machine Gun Kelly, My Ex's Best Friend - good job. We then added a new song, Maroon 5, Moves Like Jagger:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCWa3TMSNTw&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
This is a fun one! Enjoy!
May 24th, 2022
Lauren decided that last week's song was too hard (Love it when you hate me), so we added a new one:
Machine Gun Kelly ft. blackbear - My ex's best friend
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyWqhXRrs-k
We went over it a few times - it's a bit too hard too, i think, but she wants to try it. I really would like her to try to pick some of the songs that have sheet music in them, as it's much easier to know the places you need to change, etc.
We'll see how it goes next week! See you then!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ir2UCwijLA&ab_channel=SteveHowardDrumTutorials
This is a very hard song, but try it at 75% if you want!
Otherwise, pick another song -- preferably one with notation to make it easier to work through it.
May 10th, 2022
We added Panama by Van Halen...

May 3rd, 2022
Lauren has covid so won't be able to come tonight.

Miss America did a great job on We're Not Gonna Take It. Next in line? Motley Crue: Same Ol Situation

GREAT job on Levitating! That's what I like to see.
She also played through Piece of Me, and that was fairly good as well.
This week we're doing Twisted Sister, We're Not Gonna Take It:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78vaIm-UeJ8&ab_channel=RedeyePercussion

April 5th, 2022

Lauren played Rolling the Deep very well! Nice job!
This week she's playing Avril Lavigne, Deja Vu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmlDRxRqFF8
A reminder to look through those youtube channels I sent last week to try to find some songs with sheet music at the bottom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0J7oLC8VlU&ab_channel=LaffeyTaffey577
February 8th, 2022
Good job on American Kids - that was a hard one because drums were so quiet on it.
Today we started Luke Bryan, Move:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88JX07qeAf0
February 1st, 2022
We spent most of the lesson reviewing Thriller, and I focused on some of the little things she didn't have quite right yet.
After that we didn't have much time, and the song we looked at didn't have much in the way of drums on it. (Kenny Chesney, American Kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de1aPKXBdAE)
January 25th, 2022
Great Job on Here I Go Again!
We tried adding a song Youth Gone Wild by Skid Row, but it was a bit hard:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q1jGicDr7E&ab_channel=FRANKYCOSTANZA
We settled on
Michael Jackson, Thriller
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPAd-4dzFu0
January 18th, 2022
Lauren did a great job on Take My Breath by the Weeknd, even getting some of the hard spots!
We added a new challenging one tonight, Whitesnake, Here I Go Again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeYx4yWIVXU&ab_channel=RedeyePercussion
January 11th, 2022
we went through Shivers and then added Take My Breath by The Weeknd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0oUHwX1SEU&
January 4th, 2022
Lauren is feeling unwell today.
December 21st, 2021
Lauren did a great job on the Hymn for the Weekend, and so we started plugging away on Shivers.
It's nice to have the notation, and I understand that it's a bit hard to see. Do your best to follow the notes if you can see it!
Merry Christmas!!!
December 14th, 2021
We decided Lauren should practice Hymn for the Weekend one more week, just to iron out those little details she's missing.
We also added a the new song (Ed Sheeran, Shivers)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8tjsS6Hfmo
See you next week!
December 7th, 2021
Lauren played the My Kinda Party song for me, which she has been working on for two weeks. A big improvement this week! Very good!
We finished off the lesson going back to Hymn for the Weekend.
She expressed some interest in Jacob's song, Thriller by Michael Jackson, so maybe we'll add that one next.
November 30th, 2021
Lauren played through My Kinda Party - and we decided that it needed another week's work.
We also added Hymn for the Weekend:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj1laqk8KLY&ab_channel=Wattadrummer
November 23rd, 2021
I forgot to include last week's other song, "My Universe." We went over Paradise first, then My Universe together.
We then added Jason Aldean, My Kinda Party:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q734FcQMBZk
See you next week!
November 16th, 2021
Keep working on BTS, and add Paradise the Elephant:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbcxOf8L-Ko
Great job, Lauren!
November 9th, 2021
Great job on Castle on the Hill!!!
Here's the new one, My Universe:
https://youtu.be/lmedECNLnXA
This is tricky, but I know you can do it!
November 2nd, 2021
Lauren played through Bad Habits a couple of times for me (the first time on the wrong stool, which made it harder for her to get the fills that include the kick like we worked on last week).
We then added a new song, Ed Sheeran, Castle on the Hill:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msfBcwjQ9e0
This has a challenging floor-tom / snare part which we worked on separately too.
October 26th, 2021
Lauren did a great job on Me 7 Ur Ghost, and so we added a new one: Ed Sheeran, Bad Habits:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8_XB9f09Pc
October 19th, 2021
Monsters was a difficult song, probably too hard for even me to play, but Lauren was able to work her way through it fairly well. Because if it's complexity I didn't review any of the problems but we moved on to a new song.
October 12th, 2021
Lauren played through Hey Brother for me (and nailed it!) Good job!
We then added All Time Low, Monsters:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwRM6PTOzLI
This is VERY hard. Have fun!
October 5th, 2021
We started with reviewing the songs from last week, Starboy and Wake Me Up.
We added Hey Brother by Avicii
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxIiPLVR6NA
Played through it three times - it was easy. Add another next week.
September 28th, 2021
We reviewed Chevy Spaceship, then added two new ones:
The Weeknd, Starboy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xizN47Box_Y
And Avicci, Wake Me Up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5y_KJAg8bHI
September 21st, 2021
In Lauren's lesson we went over Wake Me Up When September Ends, which was great - just a problem with the kick part.
Then we added a new song by Tim McGraw called Chevy Spaceship
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zKy_RwC_N8
September 14th, 2021
We reviewed last week's songs, then added this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FqE5hCdbYI
Fun!
September 7th, 2021
We reviewed the last two Weeknd songs, then added a new one, After Hours:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPrV_mQSSrg
Remember this is a sixteenth beat. Don't forget to play the sixteenth right after the snare. You forget about 1 out of 10 times. :)
We also added I Feel It Coming:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFLhGq0060w
---
I'll send the songs for Sunday hopefully by tomorrow.
August 24th, 2021

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w42qMmXrwbE
Great job on All Star!!!
June 22nd, 2021
Lauren played Burn It Down for me first, and did really well on it! It was fairly straightforward, and she executed it really well.
Then we added a new song, All Star by Smash Mouth:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT5JaB5agSE
June 15th, 2021
Lauren played through three or four of the songs she'd done over lockdown, and then we added a new Linkin Park song, Burn it Down.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgEKLhvCCVA
Pretty easy, so shouldn't be a problem.
Here's a drum cover:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ywz8BzjHuMg
June 8th, 2021
Lauren played through Have a Nice Day for me, and then we added a new one, Linkin Park, Crawling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnDC0JAcYp0
June 1st, 2021
Lauren played through More than a Feeling for me, and really seems to nail it.
We then added Have a Nice Day by Bon Jovi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzWO7O-qHWI
May 25th, 2021
Boston, More Than a Feeling:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPYrX7m5Vcs
May 4th, 2021
April 27th, 2021
AC DC No Man's Land was awesome - after Lauren played it through for me twice, we added a new song she'd already started a bit, by Kenny Chesney, Rock Bottom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bufIrJGTmN8
Another fun song!
April 20th, 2021
https://zoom.us/j/6994346838?pwd=dzY2dmhIOSttTTNOcHZmdTdFdVgvQT09
Lauren played through last week's song for me twice, and then we added No Man's Land by AC DC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5MdhcX7Ro0
April 13th, 2021
Lauren played through Dream On for me twice, and a new song she was working on by Queen, Under Pressure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByAory8e2dA
Great job!
April 6th, 2021
Lauren plyed through Don't Fear the Reaper, and then we added a new song:
Aerosmith, Dream On:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9srmft6STc
March 30th, 2021
I see I forgot to take notes Tuesday.
Lauren did really well on Quiet Riot, and we moved on to a new song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSrCBzfzAxI
March 23rd, 2021
We played thru Wild Reputation twice - the second time was even better than the first! Great job.
We then added a new song, "Cum on Feel the Noize" by Quiet Riot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnnD3SIjfb0
Fun one!
March 16th, 2021
Lauren did so well on Shoot to Thrill! A hard song, and she really learned a lot of it!
next she added a new AC/DC song, from their new album, called Wild Reputation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0rYBAVCzNs
March 9th, 2021
Lauren played through Sweet Emotion for me, though she said she hadn't reviewed this one... she did even better than last week, and without practice!
We then went over Shoot to Thrill, and focused quite a bit (maybe too much?) on the tom bridge thing... it's kind of hard, and she was having some trouble comprehending the beat.
I wrote it out for her, but it's like this:
1 TOM, 2 TOM 3 tim tom 4 tom tim
That's the left hand. The right hand plays constant eighths like a high hat on the low tom.
March 2nd, 2021
Last week was sweet emotion, which I forgot to take notes on:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qye47KmMOVQ
Really good! There were some minor kick issues, but if you keep working on improving that this week, you'll get it.
We then added an AC DC song called Shoot to Thrill:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or_IO6bHBf0
February 23rd, 2021
February 16th, 2021
Linkin Park, What I've Done
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkwW9tdOV6Q
Wow! Hard snare part, and Lauren really did well on it! Nice and tight playing too. Good job!
We added a new one by Skid Row, 18 and Life:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWmHREB_O10

We played thru both Nickelback songs, and added Savin' Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh3Au31Mqmo
We had a good time jiving to the music today! :)
January 26th, 2021
We went through Code Red - sounded great! Nice job, Lauren!
We then added a new song, by Nickleback, called Lullaby:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjkJ6GZh-pY
Right off the bat, Lauren seemed to get the kick part, so I'm very happy with that. It's a bit hard to hear all the details when she's playing, since the drums she's playing are loud, so just practice with the headphones this week, and try to match the sounds you hear.
January 19th, 2021
AC DC - Code Red:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-GeHAo7J38&ab_channel=BOBNARSimon%C5%A0krlec
January 12th, 2021
Lauren played Can't Hide Red - she got the fill really good the first time! It was a little less in time the second. Keep that kick steady is the trick.
We then added Burn It to the Ground, by Nickleback
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqBNw4WSBQU
January 5th, 2021
Lauren played through the last two songs we've been working on, Can't Hide Red and Wonder.
There is a fill in the middle of Can't Hide Red that I recommended she continue kicks through to stableize the beat.
We also worked on getting her ride cymbal to work - the plug in the cymbal was just a wee bit out... it might be dirty contacts, which you could clean by putting some alcohol on the male side, and then pushing in and out on the cable a few times... or perhaps a light cloth dampened with alcohol rubbed on both contacts if you can reach into the hole.

Lauren played through We Are the Champions for me, and did pretty well on it.
We added a new song, by Shawn Mendes, called Wonder:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHeQemJJQII
It's got some challenges in it, but she's eager to stretch herself.
We won't be having lessons at my studio while in lock down, so will have to go online, or postpone until lock down is over
December 8th, 2020
We did "We Are the Champions" today, by Queen. This video is a drum cover by a young woman, so it's easy to see what she's playing.

December 1st, 2020
Lauren isn't feeling well tonight from her tooth extraction.
November 24th, 2020
Lauren did well on Payphone!
We decided to learn some 50's Rock and Roll style music tonight, and started with Jailhouse Rock by Elvis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj0Rz-uP4Mk&list=PLJwjh0h_yZsY0v-S2ZJqAvgdwJ76IcpPs&ab_channel=gaza45454545
That link is a playlist to other 50's rock.
November 17th, 2020
I missed Lauren tonight - hope all is well.
November 10th, 2020
We added a new song after listening to the Supernova song... good job on that, btw!
Maroon 5, Payphone
https://youtube.com/watch?v=U3iWZfiKmto
The sixteenth fills are tricky - you can do it, :)
See you in two weeks!
November 3rd, 2020
We went over the Rock Star Supernova song, and added a new one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXDAdJ_Cf0Y
It has a weird tom thing at the beginning, and throughout the song. three sixteenths: 123, then three quarters 1, 2, 3,
123(rest)1,2,3
the kick is on eighths through the whole intro thing.
The rest of the song has a beat like kick kick snare, kick kick snare
October 27th, 2020
We played through the two Post Malone songs, and added a new one by Rockstar Supernova:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQc_6kDKw_U&
October 20th, 2020
Great job working on Shot in the Dark you nailed it!
Today we added Post Malone, Circles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sca9FP6zl8
This is pretty fun, and easy - just watch the three snare fill...
We also talked about adding Post Maline, Take What You Want... you can work on that this week.
October 13th, 2020
Lauren played through Paradise City for me - amazing job! :) Intense!
We then added a new song, recently released, by AC DC, called Shot in the Dark:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNhn1KOqq8g&ab_channel=acdcVEVO
It's pretty simple, but there are a few places that need focused attention, like the cymbal chokes at the beginning and middle, and the little fill after the choruses and at the ending of the song.
October 6th, 2020
We went over Never Too Late a couple of times - very good Lauren!
Then added Guns N' Roses, Paradise City
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdzDDg346I0&ab_channel=ColmDowling
We just reviewed the first half of the song really, as the second half will take a bit of work. :)
September 29th, 2020
Lauren added a REALLY fun song this week, by Three Days Grace - Never Too Late:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qOvNgEsZ9s&ab_channel=xXmusicforliveXx
It has lots of challenging fills, toms, and unusual kick patterns. PRactice, and blow me away! :)
September 22nd, 2020
Lauren played through Chase the Ace for me - it wasn't as good as her other songs, but has some challenging up-beat crashes and so on, so we moved on.
She added a new song, that uses a sixteenth style of playing the hat, but since it's in double time, the snare is twice as often. We worked out how to play that, including adding the double kick only the fourth time.
The song is Blinding Lights by the Weeknd:

September 15th, 2020
Lauren did so well on Numb by Linkin Park! She played through for me, and then we added a new one:
AC DC, Chase the Ace:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYw-ZTLqIpg&ab_channel=AC%2FDC-Topic
This has got some challenging upbeats in it, but she's close already, so it shouldn't be hard to get it.
September 8th, 2020
It's always great seeing Lauren! She played through Holiday by Green Day for me, and then we added a new song:
Numb, by Linkin Park.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qZxMY7FZf8&ab_channel=RexorEntertainment
It's got a quick and complex kick beat, but Lauren is very close on it - don't forget to work out the drum fills and crashes this week.
June 23rd, 2020
Thanks for a great year, Lauren! You have grown so much, and learned to do a whole bunch of new things this year. You've worked harder at learning hard stuff too, like ghosting and triplets, and playing the hat and kick independently! That's a big deal, so pat yourself on the back.
I hope you have a great summer! If you come back in the fall for more lessons, then we should focus on doing even more complex beats, and maybe work from some actual drum sheet music!
Blessings to you!
June 16th, 2020
We added Holiday by Green Day:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52Dadg-xbf8
Hard one, but I know you can do it!
June 9th, 2020
Lauren did a great job on in the End, and we continued with Nirvana.
It's a fun one! I reminded her to listen carefully to the kick and match the guitars, and to also watch the fills.
June 2nd, 2020
Lauren played through Kryptonite - nice job on the rolls!!
She then added Linkin Park, In the End:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iw1Q8BvayU&ab_channel=MightyMouseDex
That video is a good drum cover of the song.
If you want Lauren, consider adding Smells Like Teen Spirit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0w3OljN21s&ab_channel=MightyMouseDex
May 26th, 2020
Lauren played This Afternoon for me. I reminded her that there's a swing on the hat with that one, and we went over those details quickly.
Then we added a new one, Kryptonite:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPU8OAjjS4k&ab_channel=3DoorsDownVEVO
May 19th, 2020
Lauren played through Shook Me Al Night Long, and did great on it! We then added another new one, (wow!) and went through it.
Watch the swing (uneven beats) on the high hat- you're playing them too even right now.
Nickleback, This Afternoon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r723n5vWBWU&ab_channel=TheNumberonecreedfan
May 12th, 2020
Lauren played leave the lights on, and then we added AC DC You Shook Me All Night Long:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo2qQmj0_h4&ab_channel=acdcVEVO
May 5th, 2020
Great job on It's On! This week we added another Supernova song:
Supernova, Leave the Lights On
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbhBZvirAXo&ab_channel=Nikkisixx30
April 28th, 2020
kick di di di snare di di kick di kick di kick snare di di di
three middle kicks are all played at the same time as the left hand plays the high hat.
The first kick is with the right hand of the hi hat, but the rest are the left hand.
It's On, by SuperNova:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK0VTmF9DRM
April 21st, 2020
We reviewed last week's song, Hells Bells. Great job!
We then added AC DC, Noise Pollution:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ7AoeQAgsU&ab_channel=MatzeDrummer
April 14th, 2020
Lauren did a good job today - we started out trying to use Zoom, but reverted to Facetime.
She played through Into the Unknown to start off with, and I was able to hear the music and the drums, so much better! It sounded really good. There was something a little off at the end, but I think it was a mistake that she can work out on her own? Sorry I can't be more specific, that's one of the challenges of these virtual lessons.
We then listened through another song, Hells Bells:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYmD0XT4JRg&ab_channel=JoeEhJoeEh
See you next week!
April 7th, 2020
Lauren played through New Divide for me, and we added Into the Unknown from Frozen 2;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8NXbJW6pgU&ab_channel=AtTheDrum
There is a great video (link above), that has the drum notation in it, which should help to really play it correctly.
Let me know if you have problems with it!
March 31st, 2020
We reviewed Baba ORiley, and then added Linkin Park, New Divide:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m90Tlwxehh0&ab_channel=PriscilaGuerrero
Challenging over the phone, but I think it worked pretty well!
March 9th, 2020
Lauren did well on the Nickleback song - the ghosting was maybe just a little less than I'd like, but I had her play it for me a bit after the song. She has the right idea, just needs to not kick at the same time as the ghost for the right feel.
After that, she wanted to learn Baba O'Riley by The Who! Crazy song, but she had much of it already figured out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY5rztWa1TM
There's a spot where the drums really speed up, so she should watch that spot, see if she can copy what they're doing there.
March 2nd, 2020
Lauren played Somday really well, but missed the ghosting snare so we spent most of the lesson trying to learn that concept.
The song has ghosting at the beginning of the verse, like every two bars I think... it's not a big deal, but is a nice extra thing to be able to do, and add to your drumming toolbox.
February 24th, 2020
Lauren did a great job on 5 Seconds of Summer, - she played it through for me twice.
We then added Someday by Nickleback.
Here's the boy drummer, a little sloppy playing, but not too hard:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv-DyatpUpc
Here's the girl drummer, she's reading, it's much more accurate and maybe easier to see and hear what she's doing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpPwY1P5mC4
Here's the lyric version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmFWDUQMj-g
February 10th, 2020
We added a new one, by 5 seconds of summer, called Teeth.
Here's one drummer's version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dc3fxXQhS4
and another's:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41WyINYSyGc
And the original, lyric version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_03wQecDt4U
I'd say try your best to use some of their ideas, but have fun and do your own thing with it too.
February 3rd, 2020
Here's Monsters:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTFbGcnl0po
Today we worked more on Sweet CHild O Mine - the kick - pay attention to that - it's on AND 3, not on 3 AND.
Also, the fills are very characteristic in this song - maybe listen to the actual song to get the fills just right.
January 27th, 2020
We played through Knockin' on Heaven's Door with the electronic kit, and then moved on to another Guns N Roses song, Sweet Child O' Mine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTMIoHQ-nnY
We didn't spend a lot of time breaking it down, but pay attention to the kick beat, it's opposite to how you want to do it by instinct.
January 20th, 2020
Lauren did come! :)
She blew me away, as expected, with Welcome to the Jungle.
After that, we added another Guns N Roses song called Knockin' On Heaven's Door:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8OHybVhQwc
This is pretty straightforward, and she has a good handle on it already.
January 13th, 2020
Lauren played through the Chainsmokers song for me, and did pretty well on it - missing on a couple little details.
We added a new one by Guns N Roses, called Welcome to the Jungle - it's pretty challenging, with lots of complex detail in the drum parts - Knowing Lauren, she'll blow me away!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sV3lOua3Ao
I made a recording for the triplets in the intro on the highhat.
January 6th, 2020
Lauren did a fantastic job on Rockin' Around the Clock - she played it through for me, and then we added a new song by The Chainsmokers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7R0ywBlIGM
It's pretty simple, although the kick drum is kinda complicated. I think once in headphones, you'll be able to hear all the details.
December 30th, 2019
Note for the 30th of December: I believe Lauren would be away on the 30th, so entering it into the schedule now so I don't forget.
December 23rd, 2019
I think I knew that Lauren wasn't coming this week, but I forgot to write it down.
December 16th, 2019
Lauren did a great job on "Last Christmas," so we moved on - we added "Rockin' Around the Clock," by Brenda Lee:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is4NQkUN3AI
This has a different style of high hat (at least in the beginning, we didn't get far into the song) where the hi hat plays two ticks, and the kick is on the second one.
We made a video of Lauren playing it.
December 9th, 2019
After going through American Idiot, we decided to switch gears right away and move on. We added Last Christmas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8gmARGvPlI
It has crashes on 2, along with crazy random snare fills - it will be a case of listening carefully to get the details correct.
December 2nd, 2019
Lauren did an amazing job on The Champion.
We added American Idiot as the new one, and it's pretty hard! I made a video for her to help her how to play the up beats on the kick for bars 2 and 3.
Good job! See you next time!
November 25th, 2019
We reviewed Photograph, it sounds great - though the bridge highhat was a bit of an issue - that's okay.
We added a new song, The Champion by Carrie Underwood. It's got a tricky drum beat in it, so you'll have to think it through really carefully. I made a video to help.
Think,
"1 2 3 kick snare 6 kick ... kick, snare"
November 18th, 2019
Really amazing job on the chorus - just the middle verse that needed some work.
Remember:
Kick kick snare, kick snare
Another way to think of it:
Snare on 4, then 3...
If you have trouble take out the kick, and just do the 16th hat with the snare.
When you get really good at the verse, add the crashes and the extra little kick that happens once in a while if you can.
November 11th, 2019
Lauren did great on Counting Stars.
We added a Nickleback song, "Photograph":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mJXhEeWhI4
Some weird snare things happening in there... fun though!
If you do sixteenths on the highhat, it will be easier to play the kicks independently of the hat beats.
Pay attention to the snare beat in the verses, when it's not on a regular beat. If you could 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4, the snare is on 4 the first bar, and 3 the second.
November 4th, 2019
We played through See You Again once - kick still wasn't quite right, but we moved on to Counting Stars by OneRepublic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA2ANi_oeK0
Listen through it and get all those drum fills right! :)
October 28th, 2019
We went through See You Again - Lauren is struggling still with the sixteenth kick and the eighth hi hat beat. I made a video to help simplify it, but I'm not sure it's much help -- she's going to have to just work on that, and that only and get much slower.
We also reviewed the tom tom thing, using the hand to push up the pitch of the drum note. When she does this she should really work on staying on the beat.
The most important thing though, is the even high hat.
October 21st, 2019
In the See you Again song, work on getting that hi hat even in the fancy kick thing.
Also, add crashes to the beginning of each section.
Consider adding tom toms on the parts that have electronic drums.
Play the crazy kick parts a little softer - don't kick the bass drum quite so hard on those fast notes.
If you listen with headphones, you'll notice that the snare has little rolls.
October 7th, 2019
Panic! at the Disco, Hey Look Ma I made It:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5VtJwuNWGY
September 30th, 2019
We played through the two songs from last week and added a new one by Imagine Dragons, called Whatever It Takes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMJ20768Fxs
You can play the hat with two hands, the sixteenth style playing, but slower... resist speeding up as much as possible.
Try to listen through to hear where the crashes are, so you can add them in the same places... extra points if you can find the fills too!
Great job!!
September 23rd, 2019
Lauren did an AMAZING job on You Give Love a Bad Name!
We added an easy-peasy Jonas Bros song, called Only Human, and then another Bon Jovi song called Dead or Alive.
Get the rolls proper, so you let the stick bounce. Both songs have some rolls in them.
September 16th, 2019
crashes on shot through the heart on Shot and Heart
fill:
snare boom boom boom snare boom snare
practice the double boom technique where your toes go down first then the heel
after those toms on shot through the heart, there's a kick kick snare
really fast drum fill near the end, after the bridge.
September 9th, 2019
Lauren had a great summer! It was awesome to see her again!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9tKwSboJeg
We added Bon Jovi, You Give Love a Bad Name.
It has two main drum beats, where thekick is a little different.
THe chorus has a push in it. Kick on Shot and Heart, and YOu and Love...
In the verse, the kick has that double after three verses so kick snare kick snare kick snare kick kick snare.
The part before the chorus has a slightly open hi hat.
The intro starts with kick snare...
fill: diga diga dut, diga dut dut, diga dut.
June 24th, 2019
June 17th, 2019
June 10th, 2019
June 3rd, 2019
Amazing job on the fills in the bridge of Gotta Be Somebody.
We added a new one, called If Tody Was Your Last Day:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShhnMXDuw3w
In the chorus there's an extra snare after beat three, on the first 16th of that beat.
Don't rush the snare on beat 4.
May 27th, 2019
May 13th, 2019
So play the hat with the pedal through that big fill thing, on quarters.
also, don't forget the extra kick on the and of beat four.
May 6th, 2019
Gotta Be Somebody by Nickleback:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCDBG58CD8E
Thing to work on:
Snare roll fill
Hat not pairing with kick
Snyncopated fill
Lots of Crashes
April 29th, 2019
Kenny Chesney - Get Along
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LI8X-GhFA8
April 22nd, 2019
April 15th, 2019
Work on the crashes on "Thriller" and don't stop the highhat right before that crash, if you can help it.
In the bridge, don't forget that little double kick thing, and then on the words "WALK IN" there is a kick on both words, and that happens a few times later on in the bridge.
On Billie Jean, the beat is really easy, but there are a few random snare and tom fills you will have to watch for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9pd3M1Sxe8
April 8th, 2019
We added Thriller by Michael Jackson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIx_HbmRnQY
The intro has some crashes on the keyboard parts, with a flam, and then starting the 16th note beat with a kick on every quarter.
The bridge in the middle of the song has a slightly different kick beat to listen to and try to copy.
Put a floor tom on "door slam".
Put crashes on "Thriller"
April 1st, 2019
March 25th, 2019
March 18th, 2019
We reviewed the Queen song, Somebody to Love,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kijpcUv-b8M
and I asked her to do it for another week, to just tighten things up so she's not behind the fills and crashes.
Then we added a fun one by Kenny Chesney:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEUWxf9kjeU
March 11th, 2019
March 4th, 2019
February 25th, 2019
Great job on the Money Money 16th thing. It's getting much closer. We don't need to go over it again next week, but please keep working on that when you think of it.
The Adam Lambert song that kick is really fast.
The new song this week is by Queen, We Will Rock You, and also Bohemian Rhapsody:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ
here's the Muppet version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgbNymZ7vqY
See you next week!
February 11th, 2019
The kick groove meshing with the hat is really hard, because the kick and hat want to do the same thing instinctively.
If you think this way, it might help.
(1)Boom, (2)Snare Boom (3)Hat Boom Boom (4)Snare
February 4th, 2019
Good job Lauren!!!
Hi hat with the kick neds to be focused on with the new song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcQNmQdVhlY
Also, the extra snares every four bars... take the time to learn that.
January 28th, 2019
Lauren added Money Money Money this week, we did the old Abba version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETxmCCsMoD0
It's fun! Sixteenths, open hat, kick on quarters, fill at end on snare, beast 2 all the way to beat 3.
And work on last week's song.
January 21st, 2019
We did Mamma Mia by Abba, and worked through some of the fills and etc. She's basically got it already.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Tjlxpf06Gg&t=374s
Sorry I was late today!
See you next week!
January 14th, 2019
January 7th, 2019
We worked on the chorus of Money Talks, especially the beat 4 fill, and the crash on beat 2 with the snare.
I won't be here next week, I'll be in the sun!
See you in two weeks!
December 31st, 2018
December 17th, 2018
We went over Church Bells a couple of times, and worked on the fills a bit. Lauren might try to continue improving them.
We then added Money Talks by AC DC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lqdErI9uss
Fun song, with lots of neat fills and other elements.
December 10th, 2018
Amazing job on Big & Rich's Save a Horse song! You really nailed it today!
We added a new song, by Carrie Underwood, Church Bells:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuLOHf32mzk
December 3rd, 2018
Good job with the BonJovi song! If you keep practicing it, don't forget that cool snare/kick kick snare/kick kick snare fill!
New Song: Big and Rich, Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1CdWr4ZhrI
Some points to remember:
1 the flam between the kick and snare (not just a snare flam).
2 eighth kick - but don't slow down- keep it light and fast
3 after eigth kick, sixteenths on the hat, accent the ones on the beat (1 2 3 4)
November 26th, 2018
We reviewed the Greenday song once, then went to our new Bon Jovi song, and worked through some of the fills etc.
This is a fun song!
November 19th, 2018
We went over Don't Stop Believing, and it was really good - though sadly missing any high-hat. I didn't mention it, as I think it might be too hard to put it in at this point.
We then went over Green Day's song, and it's very close... missing an open high-hat on beat two before the fills. Happens twice.
Then we added a new song, Living On a Prayer, by Bon Jovi:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXsmGSnq3lE
Great job!
November 12th, 2018
Lauren came early today, at 3:00, and we went through Don't Stop Believing. There were a few small things, like extra crashes on the beginnings of sections, and keeping the toms in the same place on every bar.
Also, I'd love to have high hat added.
We then added a new song to try - though we'll continue with Journey for next week also.
Greenday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5EXKDlf44M
November 5th, 2018
We reviewed Shotgun, and then added a new song, by Journey: Don't Stop Believing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9NeNwEr-2k
This has some fun toms parts. I made a video to help her remember how to do it, and to add high hat in the song.
October 29th, 2018
October 22nd, 2018
We started by going over the last week song, which she really NAILED. Fun! She even had the hi hat in it, which was terrific.
We then added a new song by George Ezra, called Shotgun:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_B3qkp4nO4
The drums change up quite a bit in this, and it's hard to hear the snare at all -- there's a ringing pipe sound that we used the side of the cymbal stand to emulate.
October 15th, 2018
Here is the video for the next song. I recorded a loop for the drums for you to practice with.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kILnd32F5LI
October 1st, 2018
We moved on to a new song this week, Thunderstruck by AC DC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2AC41dglnM
The hi hat is causing slow down, so really be careful to stay on tempo when you're playing kick and snare with the hat.
September 24th, 2018
Don't forget the two different beats in the first verse.
Add the high hat on sixteenths - all the way through.
AND don't forget the fills we worked on, so you can play through the whole song.
September 17th, 2018
We continued with the new song, working through a fill especially, and then combining the fill in the context of the song.
I made a video to help her for practicing.
September 10th, 2018
We started out with a new song, by Florida Georgia Line, called Round Here.
The intro is much like the rest of the song - with only the first verse seeming to have something a little different.
I recorded a video for Lauren to practice with, showing her the parts with just kick and snare, and also adding the hat if she was feeling motivated to try it.
June 25th, 2018
June 18th, 2018
June 11th, 2018
June 4th, 2018
Lauren is away this week, her mom and dad are gambling.
May 28th, 2018
We focused on the first part of the song, working out the way the hat combines with the kick and snare.
Start slow, get used to how the beat works, and gradually speed it up until you're comfortable with it.
May 14th, 2018
We added Blake Shelton, Footloose:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mzpuUzLKx4
May 7th, 2018
Lauren nailed Maps by Maroon 5- she learned all the parts well. We worked on a few missing things, like the snare on beat 2 after the crash, and getting back into the beat after the fill.
We then added Meant To Be:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDo0H8Fm7d0
April 30th, 2018
We continued work on Bad Wolves, and added a new song - Maroon 5, Maps:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U06Lf1VtAZ8
This is a fun one, with some unique drums approaches. I did a video of the first few parts to help her learn it.
April 23rd, 2018
We continued working on Walk The Moon, and she's really got it good - let's come back to it in a few weeks to see if you've worked out the bugs.
We then added a new song, Zombie, as performed by Bad Wolves:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XaS93WMRQQ
April 16th, 2018
Lift the heel to do the fast kicks, like boo-boom. The heel and the toe both have a part to play in that one movement.
Also to the roll everyday for two minutes.
There are a couple of fills in the beginning part of the song too - learn those with headphones.
April 9th, 2018
We continued with the Greatest Showman, and I suggested she work on rolls more this week, as well as adding sixteenths and some more of the fills in the ending of the song.
We will add a new song next week:
One Foot, Walk the Moon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcaL-N0AiDw
April 2nd, 2018
March 26th, 2018
We went over I Hold On, and Lauren really nailed it - there was something small - the high hat, and the position of her heel ... just listen, and if you don't hear the hat responding how it's supposed to, check your feet.
Then we added a new song, with a cool tom roll at the beginning, called The Greatest Show
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyVYXRD1Ans
March 19th, 2018
We reviewed This Is How We Roll, and worked on a few places where she was losing time. Counting would make a big difference for her.
We then added Dierks Bently, I Hold On:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUgYkKi7YHo
We focused on the low tom rolls through the verses, the stops, and the snare on beat four of the 2nd verse.
March 12th, 2018
March 5th, 2018
We added a new song, Florida Georgia Line: This Is How We Roll:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbxuXq_981s
It has a tricky kick drum part, with the high hat doing its own thing. Try to figure it out if you can. :)
February 26th, 2018
February 12th, 2018
In the bridge where the sixteenths happen, work on the boom boom chuck, boom boom chuck.
Use every other hand, right left righ left, and also practice bouncing the sticks on the hat.
February 5th, 2018
Another One Bites- work on pne more week, the snare joins with the clapping sound, so don't stop playing the snare on 2 and 4 when those claps come in. Also keep playing the highhat in between the claps, just like the guy in the video.
The new song, by Pink (Just Like Fire)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7KpRVrrU4w
It has ghosting in it- the kick changes every other bar - in the verses - so listen for that. (that wait before the boom boom).
There's that fast part on the hi hat in the bridge, where it's 32nds on the hat - but you can play as 16ths if it's too hard.
January 29th, 2018
In this video, the tom tom is programmed as a hand clap - so try hitting the side of the tom, to get that kind of sound.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7ZRpdJ5VcI
The snare is four sixteenths starting on the EEE of 3, with a hat on the fifth sixtheenth.
Start the fill with the right hand so the right hand is available to go back to the hat quickly.
That's it!
January 22nd, 2018
Ghosting is when you lightly add an extra beat on the ah of 2 and ah of 4:
1 ee and ah 2 ee and AH 3 ee and ah 4 ee and AH
Also pay attention to the way the kick is -- yuo hear it the clearest at the beginning.
Practice those drum fills - and do it carefully.

Lauren did really well on I Remember You, so we added a new song.
It's Luke Bryan, play it again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVohFlwnIbE
It has a hard beat (I worked on it a bit tonight) that has the tambourine on the and of each beat, and the kick on 1 and 3, and the snare on 2 and 4, with the highhat playing quietly on the sixteenths.
December 18th, 2017
We continued working through the fills, and also spent some time working on the kick - that she doesn't play kick at the same time as the snare.
December 11th, 2017
December 4th, 2017
We went over the first part of the song again, and readdressed some of the fills and shots to help Lauren figure them out. I think it's helpful to note what word a specific fill starts on, so she can wait for that cue.
November 27th, 2017
Work on only the first two verses, concentrate on the fills - pause it, think about it, do it with your mouth, then play it.

November 20th, 2017
Drum fills at 2:25, after the guitar solo, with one snare on beat 2, tom on beat 3, then snare boppin -- then later in the song on "Watch Me Explode."
We added a Skid Row song called I Remember You, we listened through and talked about some techniquesm like ride on quarters, flam on four, etc.

AC DC: TNT - Practice the details, like the fills in the middle, (there's a tom and snare) the end (crash cymbals with kick, etc). Keep high hat open a bit, play omn quarters, not eighths.

Great job on Believer! Amazing!

Listen to the high hat and copy
Listen to the toms (they aren't every time.) (three times fourth not)
Add symbol crashes here and there
October 30th, 2017
Lauren was having a bit of trouble with the Bellas Finals, so we went to an IMagine Dragons song, and worked through the kick and snare.
I wrote out the part for her, which really helped.
Imagine Dragons, Thunder:

October 23rd, 2017
We continued with Bellas Finals, and worked especially on the weird snare on the first section. I made a video for Lauren to work with.
October 16th, 2017
We finished up with Grenade today, and went on to a new song, "Bellas Finals"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDnYJVpHtxk
Listen to the snare at the beginning - there are some rolls there. Also, back and forth between the open hihat and the ride (bell and flat) in the intro.
October 2nd, 2017
Lauren really did great with Fast Cars and Freedom. We spent lots of time in the lesson on Grenade. We worked on the beat (which I drew on the back of the page) to use the toms on eighth - sixteenth - sixteenth.
Think of another song to add for two weeks from now.
September 25th, 2017
We continued with Fast Cars, and reviewed Grenade. I wrote out the kick beat for her for Fast Cars, and talked about some things to experiment on with Grenade.

We finished up Highway to Hell (It was great!) and added The Police, Every Breath You Take:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPtE-7aNBns
The fill is flam on beat 2, floor tom on 3 AND crash/snare on 4.
June 12th, 2017
We reviewed Highway to Hell - Lauren was in top form today, and we worked through various difficult parts of the song. She didn't really have much trouble with them at all.
I recorded a video of the open hihat section in the second verses.
June 5th, 2017
We finished up All Summer Long today, and added a new song, Highway to Hell:

May 29th, 2017
May 15th, 2017
We worked again on the same song- focusing really on getting those eighth notes to play through the little 'rest' of the kick drum. We slowed it down, the same speed of the help video I made, and gradually brought it up to speed. Getting there!
May 8th, 2017
We wrote out the drum beats for the hi hat, and reviewed the fill as well. I made a video for her to practice with.
It's a good idea to try the beats with the video when she's confident with it.
May 1st, 2017
Lauren worked out the kick snare really well this week, and we added the fill pattern.
April 24th, 2017

[: BOOM SNARE BOOM SNARE BOOM SNARE (WAIT) BOOM SNARE BOOM :]
Get that really solid before worrying too much about the crashes and the hi-hat.
April 10th, 2017
Beat Two Side Shot.
It's so tempting in the hurry to get it in the right place, to hit it on beat 1. but we're supposed to hit the sideshot on beat 2.
Maybe we'll do the Kid Rock version next.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwIGZLjugKA
April 3rd, 2017
Today we focused on a crash on the "E" of 4, if you could sixteenths as:
1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a.
The crash occurs twice in the chorus, and regularly through the bridge (where the ride is playing through instead of the hihat.
March 27th, 2017
Lauren really nailed the Sweet Home Alabama song today! She got the open high-hat on the 'and of four' and the eighth-note snare fill. Amazing!
We worked on adding the two kick beats on '1-and' after the high-hat closes, and also switching from the side-shot to the full snare. Work needs to be done on this.
Finally, we worked on the crash on beat '2' which is unusual - instead of the typical crash on '1', at the beginning of the chorus this song crashes on 2 with the snare on the same beat.
March 20th, 2017
Lauren had some trouble with the Heathens beat, so we paused it for now. Maybe we can come back to it later.
So we listened to a couple of songs, but settled on Sweet Home Alabama...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWfDUlVvGRs
Work on adding that open high hat on the and of four (every second measure) just like in the video.
March 13th, 2017
March 6th, 2017
Lauren was feeling a little unsure about the harder drum beat on Heathens, so we started it fresh, and made another video where we break it down into simple little parts.
Even if it takes a couple of extra weeks, I think it's worth it to focus on this harder beat.
I think she did great tonight!
February 27th, 2017
We started with reviewing Radioactive, and looking at Sweet Home Alabama.
We then added a new song, Twenty One Pilots, Heathens:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPhPgorxZ38
This has a challenging switcheroo in the snare part. I recorded a video for Lauren to help learn it.
February 13th, 2017
We went over Rockstar and then focused on the Radioactive song, especially the foot on the hi hat through quarter notes.
February 6th, 2017
Radioactive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEt7X_Ut_GQ
Please keep working on Nickleback song.
January 30th, 2017
We reviewed the Nickleback song and Lauren hadn't worked on it, so we'll give it another week at least.
We focused on the bass drum beat that's in the song, and I recorded a couple of videos, focusing on the sixteenth kick beat and the emphasis beats on the kick.
January 23rd, 2017
Today we added Rockstar by Nickelback:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiB48z0Xd_w
We also tried Moves Like Jagger:

January 16th, 2017
Lauren cannot come this week.
January 9th, 2017
We did a quick review of Stand by Rascal Flatts, then added a new song, called When We Stand Together by Nickleback:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgHE3LQCuyI
It has an interesting drum tom part in the middle which we worked on.
January 2nd, 2017
Lauren can't make it this week.
December 19th, 2016
We went over the drum parts a few times, and focused on a few of the fills that had crashes on the and of 4 and on 4.
December 12th, 2016
We reviewed Sugar by Maroon 5, but she hadn't been able to work on it with the video, because the video wouldn't play.
So we added Rascal Flatts, Stand, and it's got some neat foot / hihat things in it that we worked through.
It didn't play on the phone, but I showed Marnie how to play it anyway:

December 5th, 2016
We started a new song this week, by Maroon Five, "Sugar"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFe0G-38mYs
This has a challenging kick part, so it will be a good challenge for her
November 28th, 2016
Lauren did really well today, we did the AC DC song, and then added Seven Nation Army:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3qy8H6-5WY
Great job!
November 21st, 2016
Lauren did really well working on Back In Black - we used the sheet music her mom brought in instead of doing it just like the boy on the video... Marnie is going to print it out bigger for Lauren for next time.
November 14th, 2016
AC DC: Back In Black
https://youtu.be/Kiq9HDUkNxg
November 7th, 2016
No Internet, so we focused on a couple of extra things, especially working on opening the hihat before the snare.
We worked torward doing that on the second snare beat of the bar, which is where we ended the lesson. I took a quick video for her because Marnie was low on space... :)
October 24th, 2016
October 17th, 2016
We started with Uptown Funk, and decided to continue with it to work out some of the details Lauren is missing.
We focused on the six eighth notes snare part "rat a tat a tat a" mostly, and also on the kick snare choke fill.
October 3rd, 2016
Lauren and I worked on the 16th note beat, switching between quarters, eighths, and sixteenths. I'm glad we kept at it, because she was really getting the hang of it. . . especially when I play along.
We then continued with Uptown Funk, and worked through some of the fun parts.
September 26th, 2016
We continued with Uptown Funk - very fun! She's coming along well, and needs to work on not speeding up on some of the snare fills.
Also work on the eighth to sixteenth transitions.
September 19th, 2016
We reviewed the sixteenth note beat, and then worked at moving from the sixteenth beat the eighth note beat. I recorded a video of that for her.
We then looked at Uptown Funk, and started working on the main beat which has a kick on each quarter note, and snare on 2 and 4, and hats on eighths. We also tried adding the open hat on the AND of FOUR.
I recorded a video for her.
September 12th, 2016
We went over some beats from last year, and inadvertently added some new ones too -- the eighth note beat with the side shot in particular.
I also showed her the 16th note beat.
Sorry if I was moving too fast. It may take me a week or two to get back into the swing of Lauren's pace.
She's a sweetie!
June 27th, 2016
I slept through Lauren's lesson today, so we're going to do a make up lesson with her and her grandpa together.
June 20th, 2016
June 13th, 2016
Lauren did great this week, but I did notice just a tiny bit less "on the game" then the week before.
We reviewed the stuff she had been practicing, and then added opening the high hat on beat two with 44 time.
June 6th, 2016
Lauren and I reviewed the drum beats from last week, and also added some new stuff- her mom videoed all the new ideas to give her a frame of reference / reminder for practicing.
She did a great job again this week. I think it helps when I get out the electric guitar so there's another musical reference in the playing to help her lock onto.
May 30th, 2016
Lauren was really on top of her game tonight! She was amazing! We played through a bunch of beats with me on the guitar, and tried changing the beat a bit depending on the section of the song we were playing in-- going from sideshot to rim shot, etc.
May 16th, 2016
Tonight we played through some beats with the metronome, and Lauren did very well at keeping the time.
We reviewed side shots, and tried to play them with the eighths on the high hat, and with quarters on the hat too - she did very well, but had trouble playing the hat beat correctly.
We added a new feature- a one handed drum roll on the snare in the groove.
May 9th, 2016
Lauren was feeling tired tonight, but did a fine job just the same- there were some issues with focus maybe, but I was pleased.
There is a slight issue with her playing with a metronome, especially with the eighth note beats, and it's usually as simple as listening carefully to the metronome. Often when one is learning, they listen to themselves and not to others, so this is a good exercise.
We did some reviews of flams, sideshots, etc. - she can continue to work on what she's been doing for the last week or two.
May 2nd, 2016
Amazing lesson tonight. We reviewed the regular stuff, but also added some new things.
For example, we did a tom on beat 4 followed by a crash, every second measure.
I brought out the electric guitar and played along with her.
April 25th, 2016
Lauren did great tonight. We worked through a bunch of different things including switching between quarter and eighth notes on the hat for the 3/4 and 4/4 beats.
The sheet music I printed out worked great (much easier to read).
We also did a buzz on the snare on some of the beats, and rim shots on beat 2, flams on beat 4.
Great job!
April 18th, 2016
Lauren and I started with reviewing the 3/4 beats with eighth and quarter-note beats.
She had some big sheet music that I wrote on to describe a beat we had started a few weeks ago, the kick having an extra beat on the and of 2.
We worked on that, and then added open high-hat on the and of 4. We spent some time trying to open the hat on that beat - she is getting very close.
I want to be sure I'm being patient; it will take about 7 times longer than another student her age to acquire these skills.
April 11th, 2016
We reviewed the drum beats from last week, including the 3/4 and then I added some features (including eighths on the 3/4 beat).
We added flams and rim shots.
April 4th, 2016
Today we reviewed the eighth note beats and quarter note beats, and then I showed her how the notation works for drumming.
I wrote out the beats we've been learning, and then I showed her a 3 - 4 beat.
March 21st, 2016
Lauren was having a bit of a difficult night -- I think she may have just had a mental block or something, because beats that she used to play without problems were a bit challenging for her.
We reviewed the quarter note beat, the drum roll, and the eighth note beat. She struggled a bit with the 8th, and we didn't do the extra kick on the and of 2 at all.
March 14th, 2016
Tonight we went over the quarternote beat with the extra kick and just practiced it, and sped it up gradually. We didn't add anything new, so just keep practicing the same beats from last week along with the roll.
March 7th, 2016
We reviewed the drums beats that Lauren has been working on, the quarter note and eighth note beats. She is doing well with her playing and just needs some reminders as to what the different beats are. Once she gets going, she's fine.
We then tried adding a new feature to basic beats, where the kick drum plays on the 'and' of a beat. We started with adding the 'and' of 2.
I recorded a video to help her with this.
February 29th, 2016
I was late coming into the studio - sorry!!
We went through the stuff we did last week, and discovered that counting really helps Lauren as she plays the beat - I encouraged her to count at home as well, so she doesn't lose her spot in the bars.
She did the tom on the "and" of 7 and a crash on "1".
We've been doing the eighth note beat and quarter note beats. We held off on adding anything for a week so she can really work on these.
We also reviewed the drum rolls, which are coming along well.
February 22nd, 2016
Lauren was excited when she came in tonight, and did a really good job playing through the various beats I gave her. In fact, I'm surprised at how quickly she is able to add things like a tom hit on the "and of four," and a symbol crash on beat 1.
I played the kit while Marnie videoed me playing to help Lauren remember.
*NOTE: Marnie, did you intend to give me two checks for each week? If possible I'd prefer one check for the month.
February 8th, 2016
Lauren's first lesson went well. She seemed to really enjoy herself, and was enthusiastic and eager throughout.
I had to simplify some things and be very rudimentary in my explanations and in walking her through the beats. Her mom suggested I keep things simple and don't add too many things to the lesson so that it is easy for her to digest and retain.
