Ethan started half an hour earlier in Joel's time slot, and Seth, Joel and Ethan played Joel's new song that he's been writing.

Then during Ethan's slot, we worked on Grouplove's song, Shark Attack.

Near the end of Joel's lesson, Seth and Ethan came in and they played guitar and drums on Joel's song that he just wrote, making a little 'band,'

I decided with Ethan to use his lesson to do more of the same, and the three of them stayed to play through four or five other songs.

There's something very rewarding about playing with a band. I wish that I had videoed them!

Ethan went back to the drums today, and we worked on the 3/4 beats again. We did them as quarters and eigths, switching between the two grooves without stopping. We also added crashes and fills (1 beat, 2 beat, and 3 beat quarter note fills).

We went back and reviewed the 6/8 beats, and then finished with playing along with "Peaches" and "Here's to the Zero's"

As before, I would like him to learn the drum parts by listening and playing along, trying to get the fills and crashes in the same place as the original recording.

Ethan wanted to switch back to piano today, so we worked on a new song:

In the Valley Below, Peaches:

We spent the whole lesson working on it.

It's got a complex section in the chorus where the two hands are moving independently so he'll need to really work on this.

We reviewed the 3/4 beat, and I went back and explained the basics again to him. We learned the three snare positions on this one (beat two, three, and two-three.)

We did it with high hat on quarters and eighths.

We then worked on a snare beat with the snare on 2 as well as the and of 3.

Today we added a 3/4 beat to his repertoire of drum beats.

We also reviewed Good to You (he forgot to practice this one).

I asked him to work on the next song by Mariana's Trench, Here's to the Zeros

Ethan really did a great job today. I was impressed with everything he was able to do, and gave him some new challenges today. He really has improved over the last few months, it's really noticable.

We added a song by Mariana's Trench called Good to You:

I asked him to listen with headphones, and to learn the parts we didn't address in the lesson.

The lesson with Ethan went well today. We reviewed many of the beats we've been working on over the last few months- some of them required a bit of 'relearning,' but he actually did really well in acquiring them again.

We spent our time focusing on adding a tom flam on beat 8 and crash on beat one for each of the quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note beats.

We then came back to the beat from February 3, with the kick on only 1 and the and of 2. We included emphasis of the snare on beat 2, and opening the hat on 3and

March 2nd, 2016

We added a new song, Zelda's Lullabye - I wrote out the parts in his notebook for him to work on at home.

It seems to have been a long time since he practiced piano. He had trouble remembering what notes were which on the keyboard, and we had to review some basics like minor and major chords etc.

It would be much easier for him if he reviewed the stuff we do week by week. He should try to put 10 to 15 minutes per day in practicing for each instrument.

Today we returned to the Seven Nation Army on the drums
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3qy8H6-5WY

He's got it down much better now! The snare in the full-on 4/4 beat still gets turned around sometimes.

(Before this actually, he played through the three main beats quickly that we have been working on).

We found that switching hands around for the 4/4 beat helps him not get it backwards.

After that we added ACDC's Back in Black-- this video is a little boy playing, which is nice and easy.

He should work on the fills, and getting them nice and sharp and accurate.

Ethan decided to spend the whole hour on piano this week.

We worked on NOW by Matt and Kim to start, but after going through it a few times, added a new song by the Cold War Kids, called Miracle Mile:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq3mLvnBcTo

I wrote out the parts, and we talked about inversions, and how they work, and the best way to play the parts so your voicings aren't jumping around.

November 25th, 2015

We began with review of the three main beat styles, then revisited the song "Seven Nation Army." He's come a long way since back when we did that song initially. It's extremely important that he counts, and pays attention to what beat in the bar we're on. Changing between sections he tends to get mixed up on what beat he's playing, so that will come with just counting better.

We spent the second half of the lesson on the piano, and reviewed the NOW song by Matt and Kim. We talked about making the song more interesting by playing different styles with the right hand. We covered what I call the "rocking" or "rocker" style, and the arpeggio and double arpeggio.

Again, counting is paramount, so he needs to focus on keeping track of which beat he's on.

Ethan and I worked on a new kick drum beat, and spent 45 minutes working on it.

In case he forgets:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Hat xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Snr x x x x
Kck x xx x xx

The last fifteen we went to the piano, and reviewed How to Save a Life, and then added a new song which I wrote out for him.

We reviewed the quarter note, eighth note and sixteenth note drum beats, looked at the kick on the and of 2, the opening of the hat on the and of three, and then added a new element-- playing the kick on the thee and the AND of THREE.

He said he was getting his drums last night, so I'm excited to hear him once he starts to really practice!

October 28th, 2015

October 28th, 2015

Ethan spent the whole lesson on drums this week. He's so committed and determined!!

We worked some more on the high hat open thing, and then added a new beat where the snare is on the offbeat the second time.

We did some experimenting and working on that.

October 21st, 2015

October 21st, 2015

We reviewed the quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note drum beats, then worked some more on the extra kick on the AND of TWO. He's really come along with this well, which is cool considering he has no kit to practice on.

We then added the open high-hat to the beat, opening it on the AND of THREE and closing it on FOUR (with the second snare beat). Playing eighths on the high-hat, this is open on 6 and close on 7.

We switched to piano at 4:05 p.m.

I sent a song to work on to your email - it's How to Save a Life-- please print it out for him so he can work on it at home.

October 14th, 2015

Ethan did a good job on drums today. We reviewed the beats we worked on, and continued to focus more on the sixteenth beats.

We then added a new feature to the kick, and extra beat on the AND of TWO.

The second half of the lesson was learning "How to Save a Life" on the piano. We worked through the chords G D and Eminor, and used both hands.

October 7th, 2015

October 7th, 2015

Ethan wanted to do the full hour on drums for this lesson.

We started by reviewing the quarter-note beat and eighth note beat and we talked about why they are called that. I then asked him to guess what a sixteenth note beat would sound like, and we spent a good 30 minutes learning to play that beat, which involves both sticks on the high hat.

We took a break a few times to give him a chance to do something different, and worked on fills-- first a crash on beat 1 of bar 1, then adding toms on the and of 4, 4 and, and the and of 3.

September 30th, 2015

September 30th, 2015

Ethan did a great job on drums and piano this week.

We added a new style of groove, called an 8th note groove, then put crashes on beat one of every four measures, as well as toms on '8-and'

For piano, we talked more about chords, and went through the C scale's minor and major chords. I wrote out a few phrases of chords for him to play through, and showed him two different ways to play through the chords on these phrases.

He should practice getting it smooth, and playing evenly.

We spent the first half of the lesson on drums, and the second half on piano. Ethan expressed an interest in both.

First was focus on timing, not speeding up, etc. We spent about 15-20 minutes on that.

We reviewed the drum stuff we worked on last week, and then we played along with We Will Rock You by Queen and Seven Nation Army.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3qy8H6-5WY

Then on the piano we went over the names of the notes, learned the difference between minor and major, and played through the minor and major chords of C with both hands.

September 16th, 2015

September 16th, 2015

Today was Ethan's first drum lesson. He has taken an hour-long slot.

We spent the first part of the lesson with the names of the various drums in the kit, and then talked about the boom-chuck beat. He played it for me, and I could tell that he had trouble with tempo (he sped up a lot).

So we spent the next 20 minutes working on tempo, and I pull a metronome up on the computer for him to play along with.

http://a.bestmetronome.com/

When he practices he should play along with this metronome at various speeds (tempos) to get used to keeping time.

We then played along with the song, "YMCA" which has a strong and clear beat in it.

We spent the last half hour on some technique... the proper way to hold the sticks (the two approaches), drum rolls and bouncing the stick, etc.

We talked about four-bar phrases, and what a measure is, and tried putting a crash on beat one of every fourth measure. I then pulled out the bass and we played together, working on this.
