Past Notes

January 5th, 2021

Rose didn't want lessons today.

December 29th, 2020

We cancelled lessons today.

December 22nd, 2020

Rose forgot today.

December 8th, 2020

Rose learned Silent Night, will the melody in the right hand. She didn't go over the arpeggios in the lesson, but we spoke about it, so that's something to try when she's confident with the chords.

December 1st, 2020
2020-12-01 01:00:00 Wham!, Last Christmas

We had less time today but we added a new Christmas song, by "Wham!" - Last Christmas

2020-11-24 18:02:59 Glen Hansard, Falling Slowly

Rose went over Falling Slowly with me a few times - she's almost got it perfect. By next week we should be good to go to the next song!

November 17th, 2020

Today we worked on adding the left hand, and quarter notes in the right hand. This includes a little extra left hand note on the "and of 4"

November 10th, 2020

Rose finished up Hallelujah, and then we added a new song, Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard.

November 3rd, 2020

Rose played through Hallelujah today, first solid chords, and then one section by section to nail down the arpeggios.

October 27th, 2020

We did the arpeggios with the left and right hand today, working through the first half of the verse together, once section at a time.

November 26th, 2018

November 19th, 2018

We continued with the next lesson, doing some basic fills - single beats on 3 and 4, and flams on 3 and 4, followed by a crash.

We also added the ride on eighths, copying the hi-hat.

We talked about the extra kick beat, which she had turned around the other way in her practicing, so we did both ways, and I asked her to practice both.

November 12th, 2018

Today we tried some basic drum lessons with Rose, and she really latched onto it.

We did basic 4/4 quarter note and eighth note grooves, with the kick on the & of 2 as well.

2018-09-24 00:00:00 Adele, Hello

We went over the Lauren Daigle song a couple of times, then added a new song, "Hello" by Adele.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQHsXMglC9A

The pattern on this is a little more complicated, but it's still fairly easy.

September 17th, 2018

We worked on using legato playing between notes, so that there isn't a break between them. This involves using more fingers, on both hands.

We talked about octaves and fifths, and finding the new "1" from the octave.

We played through the song from both places (higher and lower octave)

September 10th, 2018
2018-09-10 00:00:00 Lauren Daigle, You Say

We went through the bass by numbers theory, and I showed her how to play the scale 1 through 6 on any string.

We did it with a basic beat: boom, rest, ba boom, rest

We then played through the Lauren Daigle song, You Say, with that bass line:

Rose played through the Beethoven song for me and we really focused on the last phrase, which she was (and still is) having a hard time remembering. The whole song needs to be smoothed out some.

Then we added a new song from church called Rising Sun. I showed her how to play the four chords in it: E, C#m, A, and B.

March 6th, 2017

Today Rose decided to give another go at the piano. We reviewed the note names as animals, and she identified them all over the piano.

Then we wrote a little song:

e d c / e d c / g f e / g f e / g f e d c

She did it with both hands, playing C, A, F, and C with the left hand.

Kids took a break today.

May 2nd, 2016

We did Lost Boy again, and looked briefly at playing the piano. For some reason she's balking at playing the piano now. Not sure what's going on.

She said she'd try next week.

September 28th, 2015

Rose warmed up her voice for the first 10 or 15 minutes, and then we worked on the solo for Camel Lot. She tends to yell a bit, though she can have a really pure sound too. We worked on things like posture, not lifting her chin on higher notes, keeping her throat open.

We need to come up with another thing to work on now.

We also spent some time learning the glockenspiel part for the intro, instrumental, and ending.

We'll try recording those parts next week.

2014-12-08 23:37:01

She felt frustrated with Rudoplh the Red Nosed Reindeer, so we added "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" and we went over that a few times.

She's coming along pretty well... she is hard on herself when she doesn't get something.

December 1st, 2014

November 24th, 2014

Rosie has forgotten some of the note names, so we reviewed that together. I may have been a tad hard on her, which I feel bad about, but she's got pretty broad shoulders.

We added the next part of the song Rudolph (I wrote out the notes for all the parts in her book).

We covered the correct fingering, but it was a bit frustrating for her.

November 17th, 2014
2014-11-17 23:36:56 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

We started by doing a boom chuck chuck on the left hand of Down by the Bay.

Then we learned the melody of the first part of Rudolph the Reindeer. We went over the chords too, but she was getting a bit overwhelmed, so we'll try that next week.

November 10th, 2014

Rose added the left hand to Down by the Bay, which we added last week.

Rose and I did a review of Mary Had a Little Lamb, and she's not quite to the point where Grace is yet, so I asked her to work on it some more this week. We also added Baa Baa Black Sheep.

September 29th, 2014

Rose and I reviewed Mary Had a Little Lamb, and added arpeggios on the left hand-- she's still playing them as solid chords, but can try to add the arpeggios as she gets better.

I didn't explain to her that they were called Arpeggios.

September 22nd, 2014
2014-09-22 22:36:34 Mary Had a Little Lamb

Today we reviewed London Bridge, and then added Mary Had a Little Lamb.

We used both hands for Mary, C and G chords in the left.

September 15th, 2014
2014-09-15 22:33:46 London Bridge is Falling Down

Grace and Rose basically got the same lesson today-- we learned the names of the keys, using the animal system, and I did some quizzing to help them get used to it. Gracey picked it up a bit faster.

We then learned the song London Bridge, using note names, Grace learning the left hand where Rose wasn't quite ready for that.
