Colby Dowker
Past Notes
May 27th, 2014
Today was Colby's last day.
We went over all the songs we've done over the year, and I must say I was very impressed. Colby has come leaps-and-bounds from where he was when he started.
It's really all about practising. I'm very happy with his progress.
If he takes lessons again in the fall, he should try to pick his spot as soon as he can. Come July I'll be making new spots available.

Colby forgot his book today, so we searched for songs on the Internet and worked on them that way.
We ended on the C scale, and he said he didn't know other scales, so we'll work on that next week, because it's important to know at least a few scales. :)
May 13th, 2014
Colby went home early from school with a bad headache, so can't make it.
May 6th, 2014
Colby and I went through the songs as per usual, and added a couple of new ones. We added some new notes (using valves 2 and 3) for Ab, Eb, G#, etc.
The last song we did would be a good one for him to work on this.

Apparently Colby's exam piece went really well last week. We went over a number of the exercises in his book, and added a couple of new ones we hadn't looked at yet.
We highlighted his main problem with reading, and it's confusing the notes A and G. I asked him to focus on just that this week: remembering which is which.

Today Colby and I really focused on his exam piece next week. He's made giant leaps in his ability in the last two weeks, and I've very happy with his progress.
After the exam piece we went over the other Rock song a couple of times and tried to iron out little problems here and there.
April 15th, 2014
Colby is sick today.
April 8th, 2014
Colby has a test coming up on the Hero song so we spent some more time on that one, working out areas where he's using the wrong fingering, or etc.
We did the same for the Champion song and then finished with going over the exercises, including O Canada.
He's doing much better. I'd still like to see more focus on reading the notes accurately.
April 1st, 2014
Colby is still improving. I would like to see him work on his reading, but even so, I see improvement.
We added a couple of songs from the exercises book today, and went over the other songs we usually do.
March 25th, 2014
Colby brought another new piece along today.
We started out with warm ups, and reviewed some of the other songs we've been working through. It seems he's getting better at reading, though he still struggles a bit with differentiating between A, G, and F.
March 18th, 2014
Colby brought a new piece to learn, and we went over it a few times-- an arrangement with "We Will Rock You" and "Another One Bites the Dust."
We then went over some exercises together, and the other tunes we'd been covering.
I think his biggest weakness at this point is reading notes, so I recommended he do some drills online... there are sites that can help you read faster
March 11th, 2014
Joanne was sick on the March 11th week, so I had to cancel lessons that day. This lesson will be made up at some point in the future.
March 4th, 2014
Today we went over the Lone Ranger theme and Oh Canada together.
His mouthpiece might be part of the problem on the lower notes. I don't know a lot about mouth pieces, but it's different than mine (a 7C) and he seems to have trouble with a low C.
February 25th, 2014
Colby and I went over a number of songs in his book, and finally focused on O Canada, which is a challenge, but he can totally do it.
When he plays higher notes, he should tighten his embouchure, and also use more air.
February 18th, 2014
Colby and I did our excercises with the tuner again, holding notes and trying to keep the line parallel.
After that we worked on his song, and "Oh When the Saints" and Old MacDonald?
Colby forgot his book-- I tried to run out after you but your truck was just leaving.
February 11th, 2014
Colby and I we worked through some 5 note scales with his trumpet, taking the mouth-piece off to check them in a tuner. This site (rockandroll101.ca) has a tuner which we used to help get the notes in tune.
We then found his song, Beetoven's 9th, and worked on that together.
I suggested he practice with a tuner this week, and bring his book next lesson.
His dad gave me a cheque for $75 til the end of the month.
