Declan Andress
Past Notes
April 1st, 2014
Today was Declan's last lesson.
Aysling came in instead, and we focused on the drum kit.
We learned two beats, and she did quite well.
I'll miss seeing you guys!

Declan started out today on the Ukulele, and I tried to show him the C and Am chords. He could play them, but was still more interested in experimentation which is totally fine.
He then went to the drum set, and played along with the keyboard drums for a while.
He tried the trumpet, and we worked on playing really high and really low, really loud, and really soft.
Then he went to the piano, and we worked on playing 'thirds,' -- harmonies where you play two keys at the same time, with an unplayed key between two others.

Declan and I spent the first 20 minutes with the keyboard, and I showed him how to play with the multi-timbral / voice instruments, using different weights of playing. We also played with the expression tools on the keyboard.
After that we went to drums again (his favourite, I think), and played some beats together.

Joanne was sick on the March 11th week, so I had to cancel lessons that day. This lesson will be made up at some point in the future.
March 4th, 2014
Declan was sick today, so Aisling came in. We did Katy Perry's Roar, and I taught her the names of the notes using animals names, as well as the chord Bb and Gm.
She played over the song with me once and had a pretty natural aptitude for it.

Declan didn't come today. Hope everyone's well!

Declan and I started out with the keyboard, doing the names of the keys. There's an animal story I use to help kids:
Grandma has ANTS on her counter, a BIRD at the window wants them, and a CAT wants the bird, and a DOG wants the cat. There's an ELEPHANT chasing the dog, and he's getting in the FLOWER BED. GRANDMA is watering the flowers.
A, B, C, D, E, F, G
We played along on some melodies on the piano, and then he wanted to switch back to drums.
February 4th, 2014
Declan and I jammed out again today-- I tried to focus more on keeping him on the beat and we played a lot of different beat styles-- funk, pop, dance, etc.
He said next week he wants to try the keyboard.
January 28th, 2014
Declan and I jammed out on the drums for the whole lesson, and he was awesome!! We started with some names of drums, but he just wanted to play, so we did, and I put on the drum loops, which we played with.

Declan brought his little guitar this week, and we tuned it up. Then we worked on strumming and Eminor. We also added A minor and G, though G was not really focused on.
I see that last week we learned A minor already, but he didn't seem to remember it.
It might be worth moving around on different instruments, and just giving him an interest in music as opposed to focusing on any one instrument?
January 14th, 2014
This week we learned the parts of the guitar:
1. Nut,
2. Hole
3. Neck
4. Body,
5. Frets
6. Pick Guard
7. Head
8. Machine Heads
9. Bridge
We also learned E minor and A minor.
