William Doornekamp
Past Notes
December 16th, 2025
William isn't coming tonight, I think, if I recall correctly, because of the event at the church.
December 9th, 2025
We reviewed Jingle Bells and Silent Night, and then William wanted to try to add Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. I think it's just a little difficult still, so we added Away In a Manger instead.
BTW, I wrote out the chords over the piano sheet music for Jingle Bells, and we went through that version too (he hadn't learned the verse yet before).
December 2nd, 2025
We went through Jingle Bells (good job memorizing it!) and then reviewed Frosty.
The absence of words may have made it hard for him to know how it goes, so I wrote some in, but it's still not very clear. We maybe should consider writing out the whole lyric and putting chords over it for him.
We added a new one, "Silent Night," and I did that for this song, writing out the first verse and putting chords over the changes. We went through it two or three times.
November 25th, 2025
We went over Jingle Bells a couple of times, and then talked about a good song to add for Christmas. He decided Frosty was for him.
I wrote out a simplified version, but it did require two new chords: D minor and D7. He actually picked them up really fast, and was able to get to them from his knee in 1 generous second! Good job!
After going through it a few times, we went through Jingle Bells again twice before the end of the lesson.
November 18th, 2025
We started off with trying a ZZ Top song, "Sharp Dressed Man," and William was actually doing pretty well on it, but he decided he'd rather learn something else, so we did Jingle Bells. I think it was the G that was frustrating him, along with maybe not really clear when to change the chords.
Jingle Bells is easier. :)
November 4th, 2025
We went through the names of the ukulele parts, and William knew them all.
I thought we'd try Circles next, since it has just two chords, C and F (simplified anyway). So we worked on switching between those chords quickly, and then tried playing with the song.
Grayson came in 5 minutes early, and joined us by playing along on the drums.
October 28th, 2025
Today we learned the parts of the instrument, and I asked him to memorize the diagram, and try to remember them for me next week.
We also learned G, C, and A minor and I drilled him on the first two. He got 2 seconds for the G and less than a second for the C.
Sometimes William plays on the wrong fret, so be sure to check while he's practising that he doesn't get off.
October 21st, 2025
William isn't able to come on the 21st, but booking it so that no one else thinks the spot is available.
No charge for this day.
