Past Notes

Laurie is not coming tonight
December 1st, 2025
Laurie suggested we do a new song, something by Hozier called Sweet Thing. We worked on the strumming and changes and new chords for the whole lesson.
November 24th, 2025
We took the lesson time to refresh some of the things we had done before Laurie became ill. We broke the song down into smaller two chord chunks, repeated them, and slowly added next sections until we were able to get through the whole song.
The bridge is all that remains now.
November 17th, 2025
Laurie is sick today.
November 10th, 2025
Laurie isn't able to come in today.
November 3rd, 2025
So we broke chords into 2 bar chunks and rotated through them first without a metronome, and then with- this helped Laurie switch confidently between chords. This way we got through the verse without stopping, and Laurie executed all the chords really well! This is a good strategy going forward!

Laurie said I could take her photo for the website next week.
We went through Hey There Delilah, and talked about strumming especially. I suggested she might find it easier to strum along with a drum beat instead of a metronome, like this one:

We then looked at Tennessee Whiskey and Use Somebody - the first is quite easy, but the second is a bit harder... the nice thing about the second is that it's the same four chords over and over (nearly).
October 20th, 2025
Laurie is working tonight and can't make it.
October 6th, 2025
Laurie had printed out some other songs which I had shared with her, and we focused especially on I Can See Clearly Now, along with a strumming pattern that would work.
I recorded a video for her so she could remember it at home.
We also revisited Hey There Delilah to simplify the strumming pattern.
Remember no lessons on Thanksgiving.
September 29th, 2025
Laurie brought new strings tonight, and I helped her change the strings on her guitar. After that we had a bit of time to look at Hey There Delilah, and went through some of the chords she didn't know, and the strumming pattern similar to the recording.
We didn't have much time to work on it, so we'll pick up where we left off.
September 22nd, 2025
Laurie is unable to make it tonight because she's working late.
September 15th, 2025
Today we added D7, and a new song, Semisonic, "Closing Time."
We started off the lesson by going through Country Roads, and then sang and played through Closing Time too.
I shared my Google Drive folder of songs with Laurie, and she's going to pick another one to try next time.

This was Laurie's first lesson, and she came knowing some chords: G, C, D, and E minor (and a bit of A minor).
I wrote out some chords for the key of G and key of C, and described how keys work, and how to find out whether a key has minors and majors, and what they are.
We learned B minor, D minor, and F today and started strumming through Country Roads!
