Wyatt Myers

Past Notes

June 20th, 2024

Wyatt is no longer coming to lessons.

June 13th, 2024

Wyatt wasn't very enthusiastic about lessons, and even said at the end of the lesson that he didn't really want to play piano any more.

We went over the songs in his book a bit as best we could before he would tire.

June 6th, 2024

We went through star wars a few times, and I tried to get Wyatt interested in adding some left hand. He was feeling pretty silly today, so I want about to get him to repeat and improve on things much, but slowly but surely we're getting there.

May 30th, 2024

Wyatt started off similar to last week, a bit distracted and not interested, but Tyson stepped out for a while, and I think that helped him focus. We went over Star Wars a few times, especially the second part, and I tried to help him commit it to memory.

Tyson's partner Hannah and her kids came in at the end, and that seemed to make him want to do even better.

May 23rd, 2024

Wyatt wasn't in the mood to do music today. I tried a few things to distract him, or keep his interest piqued, but just wasn't able to manage it today, sorry!
Nicole sat in his place for the last ten minutes or so, and we learned basic chord triads, and the song Champagne Problems, by Taylor Swift.

May 16th, 2024

Wyatt was Keen to work on Star wars again for the entire lesson. At some points he seems to not remember things he's just practiced, and I'm not sure if he's just being silly with me, or he really has that short-term of a memory. If you have any insights on this, I'd love to hear.

May 9th, 2024

Wyatt came with Hannah, Tyson's partner. He played Star Wars on the piano and we tried to work more on part 2.

May 2nd, 2024

Wyatt didn't have his book, so I wrote out Star Wars again for him, (maybe better this time), and we went over it for the whole lesson.

He was very engaged and attentive today.

April 25th, 2024

Wyatt was really keen and talkative today! He was eager to play through Star Wars, and we tried to add two hands here and there.

April 18th, 2024

Wyatt did piano this week. He played through Mary Had a Little Lamb for me, and I got him to play it with the left hand as well. I tried to have him play it with both hands at the same time, but we didn't get very far.

We then went through Down by the Bay, and I tried to get him to play some other songs as well. He couldn't remember all of his piano notes, so we reviewed them. It seems B causes the most problems. I think he might also not be exactly clear about "high" and "low" notes, and keeping the notes of the melody moving up and down like the notes in the music I wrote out.

We then ended with Star Wars.

April 11th, 2024

Wyatt wasn't in the mood today, so Nicole took his lesson. (I'll put the notes in your spot Nicole)

April 4th, 2024

Wyatt found his Ukulele, and today we worked most of the lesson on Happy Birthday, to sing to his brother in July.

He was able to get to the point where he could play through the whole thing himself. Next week I suggested he try to sing and play through it all himself.

March 28th, 2024

He lost his ukulele so he used mine today. He was focused initially but as things got hard he lost passion. I
have some suggestions about how to mitigate his discouragement. I can talk to you about it next week, Nicole, if you are interested. We moved to piano and he was able to play some of the songs and remember the note names. He got bored of this after a bit so we played an explosion game on the piano.

March 21st, 2024

Wyatt is sick today.

March 14th, 2024

Away for March Break

March 7th, 2024

In Wyatt's lesson we reviewed the chords he's been learning, and added G. His grandma (Shannon) brought him, and he didn't have his book.

We also learned the names of the parts of the ukulele.

February 29th, 2024

Wyatt brough in a ukulele this week, and we learned C, A minor, and F. He had a bit of problem remembering where to put his fingers, so I did some racing games to help him try to beat his own time and hopefully be more focused. It helped a bit I think.

We'll try again next week!

February 15th, 2024

Wyatt played through his past songs for me, and we added Happy Birthday.

I wrote out a left hand part for him, and he played it by himself once, but when I asked to switch with him so I played the left hand, he started to cry.

I hope I didn't push him too hard or anything. <3

February 8th, 2024

Wyatt won't be coming in today.

February 1st, 2024

We continued working through the songs Wyatt has been learning. I'm noticing that he has difficulty with patterns and remembering the sequence of even two notes in order. If I point at the page that sometimes helps, but I can't help but think there's something essential he's not quite grasping yet.

We added London Bridge today to add to his repertoire.

January 25th, 2024

We started off with reviewing the note names and the note 'animal story,' and I then had him play Mary Had a Little Lamb in the middle of the piano, down low, and up high. I'm trying to get it so he's more familiar with the melody and the notes so he can play it in a more flowing way. Practise at home will really help with this.

I then did the same thing with Down By the Bay.

We added a new song, The Wheels on the Bus.

January 18th, 2024

We continued working through Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Down By the Bay. I also led him through some finger exercises. Wyatt seems to struggle with memory and pattern recognition a bit. If you have any suggestions or insights how to help him understand, please let me know. It could be that he's just a bit young for remembering and copying the patterns.
I think practising at home more might help.

January 11th, 2024

We started out with reviewing last week's stuff, like note names, and the pattern on the keyboard.

We then reviewed Mary Had a Little Lamb, and using the correct fingers to play each note.

After that we added Down By The Bay, and spent quite a bit of time on the first few notes. It seems like Wyatt has some difficulty remembering simple patterns and repeating sections, so if you can work with him at home, it should help.

Please let me know if there are any special considerations I should understand in teaching Wyatt.

January 4th, 2024

This was Wyatt's first week. We learned the layout of the piano, and the names of the keys A through G. I showed him the animal story and how the keys are related to each other. We also played our first song, Mary Had a Little Lamb.

I drew out his hand so he'd know where to put his fingers.

See you next time!
