Ginger Gallagher

Past Notes

June 27th, 2022

Barry and Ginger cancelled today.

June 13th, 2022

Ginger is going to be singing Sails at a ladies event, and so we looked at a couple of keys, and decided to keep it in A, the original key.

We talked through playing it, and played along with drums, and then also talked about the pedal and when to lift it for optimal effect.

We focused on the voicing of the chords in the bridge again, and I tried to help her analyze it. The left hand follows the bass line, and the thumb of the right hand -- the next note -- plays the top note of that inversion. The right hand starts on the C# and continues to play a third above whatever the bass is doing.

Ginger took the shorter length lesson today (sorry again!) and played Sails for me. She's doing really well on it! We talked through the instrumental and ending bridge section a bit, as to how to play those chords... I suggested playing the third of the chord at the top, with the fifth in the thumb, and the "one" (root) of the chord in the left hand.

We worked through the song from last week, further suggesting some new ideas, like playing inversions, playing up higher on the piano, a single note in the left hand, and playing less especially when the song is at a quiet spot. Playing whole note chords up a few octaves to a higher register, and really simplifying helps a lot with making it sound soft.

As the song builds, you can go to octaves in the left hand, and add more complexity.

Ginger is doing very well! She played through a worship song for me, and had implemented a lot of the suggestions I made from last week... using eighth notes, quarter notes, rocking, seconds, etc. Great job!

We then talked about pedal technique: lifting the pedal and putting it right back down, while holding the next chord... this blends the two chords together so it's hard to hear the space between the two chords.

We then went through another song (Raise a Hallelujah), and I gave her some suggestions about how I play it.

May 2nd, 2022

The was Ginger's first week, and we talked about some chording approaches (arpeggios, "rocking," and eighth-notes in the right hand)... as well as moving the third or the fifth to different places in the full chord (between left hand and right hand).

We also talked about adding colour notes to the chord, like the 2, the 6th, and the major 7th.
