Jacob Nelder
Past Notes
April 26th, 2022
Jacob's last week.
April 19th, 2022
We were pretty relaxed in our approach today.
We did some more talking through chords, and understanding the neck, and I think Jacob might have had a few "I see!" moments. We did mostly the minor 7th chords.
I asked him to really nail the scale in both shapes, so that we can add the next shape in line.
April 12th, 2022
In Jacob's lesson we worked our way through the seventh chords as review and then added the sus chords for A, D, E, and G.
We also briefly talked about minor 7ths.
Add 9s were mentioned and 9 chords (which also have the seventh in them). The 9 is the 2nd note of the scale, but up an octave.
We talked about the order of chords in a key, (major, minor, minor, major, major, minor).
April 5th, 2022
In Jacob's lesson we started with reviewing the open chords, and he was able to remember them, but was forgetting C7 and G7. Good job.
We then talked a bit more about keeping the beat, and not playing too fast... just because you can play it faster doesn't make it better.
We then did some more scale review and I had him practice looping over 8 beat groups and did it with the drums.
March 29th, 2022
We spent the first 20 minutes or so working through the open and bar chords he's been learning, and then the last 10 jamming with him on guitar and me on drums.
He did quite well with timing compared to other times we've tried this! Good job Jacob!

I made this chord sheet to help with learning chords:

Let's work on the major chords and their 7ths this week, like A7, B7, D7, G7, C7, E7, and any others you can figure out.

Jacob is away for March break.

We had a good lesson today, I think, but I feel bad about not being able to really motivate Jacob - I'm sorry!
If you come up with any ideas of what I can do to make it as fun and cool for him, please let me know. I want to work with him.
March 1st, 2022
We worked through a couple of The Black Keys songs, including Lo/Hi and Lonely Boy:

Oh - the chord changes for the two songs, as Jason requested:
Lonely Boy:
[: E / / / | G / A / :]
Lo/Hi
[: Am7 / / / | Am7 / Dm7 (c) :]

Jacob hadn't remembered to work on the three chords I asked him to go over, so please do those again this week. E7 (both positions), B7, and Dm7.
Also, the alternative pentatonic scale that we've been learning-- with the blues note.

We talked about vibrato, and I showed him how to do it with wiggling the string. He had a wammy bar, so we attached that also, and I showed him how to use it for vibrato.
He wrote a song over the last two weeks, so I encouraged him to develop it. We talked about themes, and patterns, and I suggested a couple of ways to develop his idea.
February 8th, 2022
We reviewed the chords I asked him to learn, and then I added three more chords: E7 (two positions), B7, and Dm7. We discussed the difference between major and minors briefly.
We went over the pentatonic scale in the shape I've been trying to teach him - he didn't remember it, and wanted to just play the shape he already knew from another lesson. If he could work on this other shape, that'd be great... it's good to be able to play all the shapes.
here's a summary:

We also learned the first part of that song that plays the full riff on the B string - the name slipped my mind at the moment

Jacob didn't seem to remember the things we talked about last week (bar chord shapes, the particular blues scale I taught him, etc), so we reviewed that. We also talked about how to make solos by using small groups of patterns and varying them a bit.
I had him do a bit of experimenting that way while I played the chord progression of Heart of God. At first his patterns were way to complicated, but eventually I think he got that hang of it.
We added three new chords this week: Dm, Em7, and A7.
I'd like him to keep working on the blues scale with the blues note that I wrote in his book, as well as trying to play along with drum beats to stay in time.
January 25th, 2022
Jacob has been practising the the E shape bar chord... I showed him the A shape as well.
We then learned the blues scale, starting with the pentatonic and using the "home row" position.
The blues note is the third note on the b string.
We then worked on playing the bar chords AND a bit of the scale with a drum beat, to help him get an idea of time in music. I recommend him to continue trying to spend some time on timing every day

Jacob said he practiced playing with a song this week, but not a metronome. He also played with his dad and learned the beginning of Neil Young's Heart of Gold.
He wanted to learn some Scorpions songs, but doesn't know bar chords yet, so I gave him a theory lesson, to familiarize him with the neck.
We talked about do re me fa so la (1,2,3,4,5,6), and how to find them in two ways on the neck. I drew out a picture for him.
On 1, 4, and 5, we play major chords, and on 2,3, and 6, we play minor chords. I showed him how to play the minor shapes for both A and E. (A, Am, E, and Em).
The first finger is used as a "portable nut," which moves up and down the next like a capo.

I missed Jacob tonight - hope everyone's healthy!

We started off playing through Jacob's song that he wrote and played with Harrison. He had some challenges playing along with the drum beat, and he said that's the case at home when playing with his dad too, so we talked about a metronome, and I showed him how one works. Here's an online version:
https://www.metronomeonline.com/
I then showed him how to search for a drum beat in the speed that he finds works using the Metronome. Here's one in the speed of his song:

We played through that a few times before moving on to Crazy Train.
We used the TAB that he already has, and we worked through it, trying to play it at a slower speed so he can work out the notes carefully. We played along with Ozzy at 65% speed. He can slow a video down using the setting menu on each video:

Good job, see you next time!
December 28th, 2021
This was Jacob's first week with me, but he's been taking guitar for a while now.
He's learned some basic songs using TAB on the low E string, like Happy Birthday, and 7 Nation Army. He also has learned a Neil Young song (I forget which now), Back in Black, etc.
He prefers rock songs from the 70s and 80s.
He has only learned about four or five chords, like G, D, Em, C, and Am.
He can play power chords, but doesn't know what their names are.
We're going to start with Crazy Train as his first song with me, and he has the beginning tab written out already on one page.
