Ava Kempe
Past Notes
May 30th, 2022
This was Ava and Lois' last week, so we just had fun going over past songs, and chatting about music etc. They're such sweeties!
See you in the fall, maybe!
May 16th, 2022
Ava did really well on Old Time Rock and Roll, so we added a new one, "We Don't Talk About Bruno."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvWRMAU6V-c&ab_channel=DisneyMusicVEVO
This one is in C minor, with an A flat chord, so we put a capo on fret 3 to make it a bit easier. The chords change quickly, so try to slow it down to 50% speed in YouTube if you want to play along.

We added Old Time Rock and Roll today!

Work on the B7, so you can play it at the regular speed.

Ava and Lois aren't coming in today.
April 25th, 2022
We started with going through the chords for Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and then added a new song, "All Of Me" by John Legend:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73_DOquGBD4&ab_channel=DopeLyrics
We slowed it down a bit, but even at 60% it was too fast for her to switch to the chords quickly enough. The C is especially slowing her down.
April 11th, 2022
Ava and I worked through the chords - I made a D minor to F chord 16 bar phrase to help her, and just practice those chords. We went over it a number of times.
At the end, we just went through some of her old songs to end on a good note.
April 4th, 2022
Ava and I continued working on the chords for Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
We focused on the areas were she has trouble switching to the chord, like from E minor to F, and C to Dm.
She promised to practice at least 4 times for me this week.
March 28th, 2022
Ava and I started by reviewing Radioactive and Little Bitty and then working on the chords that need work. We then went through a bunch of songs that are in her book from the past.
Finally, I wrote out Somewhere Over the Rainbow chords for her in the same key as Lois.
March 21st, 2022
We tried adding a few different songs to find something she could play along with and not have to switch chords too much. It would be best if she could practice changing the chords more so she can keep up, because even with these songs, it's a bit challenging for her.
Here's Imagine Dragons, Radioactive:

Here's Allan Jackson, Little Bitty:

March 14th, 2022
Ava played through Rocky Raccoon with me a couple of times, and then we added Circles by Post Malone, which is a good song for beginning guitar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnLIGgTaBM0&ab_channel=7clouds
There are three chords: C, CMajor7, and FMajor7.
March 7th, 2022
We reviewed a bunch of chords. She was doing well with remembering how to play them, but struggling just a bit with fingers in the right place for a few of them. D was mixed up with D minor too, which happens, no biggy.
We added a song by The Beatles, Rocky Raccoon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA52W9cG5uU&ab_channel=tim%C9%99bac%C4%B7
The chords are pretty simple in it, and I took out the sevenths, to make it even easier for her to play them.
February 28th, 2022
Lois and Ava are sick today - I received their note through Facebook
February 10th, 2022
Cancelling today, no charge.
January 31st, 2022
We went through London Bridge and Happy Birthday, and then we added Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
and reviewed the other songs like Down By the Bay.
We reviewed all the chords she knows, and we then added the chord A7.
January 24th, 2022
We reviewed Down By the Bay and Lazy Song, then added London Bridge since her sister added that one today too. We then worked on Happy Birthday, (for Sammie), and added a new chord, D minor:

Lois and Ava cannot make it to lessons today.
January 10th, 2022
Ava and I did some switching between chords for a while, and then went over the Lazy Song really slowly, giving her time to switch chords.
Then after that we played through Down By The Bay in the same key as Lois' version, so they can maybe play together.
January 3rd, 2022
We reviewed the new chords from last week, A and E, and also F though it's pretty hard.
We then added The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG6UX2-JJek&ab_channel=DopeLyrics
This moves quite quickly, but we worked on playing one chord through out it, (just when that chord occurs)... and then on two chords at a time as they occur.
Try to get the chords fast enough to play along.
December 27th, 2021
We reviewed the names of the parts of the guitar, then played through the chords she'd learned so far, and did some strumming patterns.
We added the chords A and E, and talked about minor and major chords.
We added Happy Birthday in G, and went through it together a couple of times.
December 20th, 2021
Tonight we added chords for the Jingle Bells songs, so she could play along with Lois. We practised switching between chords to help her be able to play at the right speed.
We started adding We wish you a merry Christmas, but ran out of time. This song has an F chord, so I wrote it out for her in case she wants to try it.
December 13th, 2021
Ava and I went through the chords and strumming patterns from last week. She did well with the strums, but can still spend a bit more time in switching between the chords. This will help us learn songs and have even more fun!
We could learn to play along with her sister, or learn songs like The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars!
December 6th, 2021
Ava was amazing with switching between E minor and G! She was able to play along with me, and even to play along with the drum beat.
We added a new chord, C, to the list of chords to learn. I'd like her to also practice switching between A minor and D so that all her chord changes can be as smooth.
We added a couple of new strum patterns as well.
November 29th, 2021
Last week Lois' sister Ava came today with Randy.
We did guitar last week and learned the parts of the guitar. We drew a picture and labelled the parts, and then I quizzed her on them.
We also learned an E minor and a G chord, and how to strum down, down, down-up, down.
---------------
This week, we reviewed the E minor and G chords, and timed Ava switching to the chords from putting her hand on the knee.
We then added A minor and D, and practised strumming with a drum beat... Ava wasn't quite ready to switch, but it's good to get used to that idea.
