Evelyn Scott

Past Notes

April 14th, 2025

Evelyn came on Tuesday night this week, in Andrew's spot.

She continued working through Willow by Taylor Swift. We worked on a few places she identified as needing more practise.

April 7th, 2025
2025-04-07 17:30:00 Taylor Swift, Willow

Evelyn played through All Too Well for me, and did very well on it! Still a bit of starting and stopping but overall making progress.

We decided to try another song, and added Willow also by Taylor Swift, and in this book.

The book marks it in the key of C, with accidentals, but it's actually in G (or better yet, E minor).

March 31st, 2025

Evelyn continued with her Taylor Swift song today. She had an emotional reaction to me correcting her at one point. It seemed like she was tired and not able to handle as much as she usually can.

March 24th, 2025

Evelyn continued working through the song All Too Well. Unfortunately, I think she may have forgotten the flow parts we worked on last week. I tried to remind her that she needs to look ahead, and try to memorize notes and melodies so it sounds more like the song.

March 17th, 2025

In lessons today, we continued trying to get a better flow to the first two lines of the song. By the end of the lesson she was pretty close to playing through without pausing. I think it helped when I told her to think of it as a musical sentence. We don't want to stop the thought in the middle of the sentence, but to make it all flow together as one idea.

March 11th, 2025

Evelyn continued worked on the Taylor Swift song, All Too Well. After playing through the song once we decided to try to memorize the first two lines.

It's getting closer - I hope she can practise not stopping between the chord changes this week.

March 3rd, 2025
2025-03-03 18:30:00 Taylor Swift, All Too Well

Evelyn brought an Easy Piano Taylor Swift book today and we worked through the first song, "All Too Well."

February 24th, 2025

Piano Key Race:
https://www.rockandroll101.ca/games/piano-key-race/

Note Runner:
https://www.rockandroll101.ca/games/note-runner/

Evelyn started by playing through the second line of the song for me. She's still separating all the beats out unevenly, but I'm hoping that once it gets in the memory more, it will start to be more musical and rhythmic.

She said she hadn't been working on the last line, so we did it today hands separately first, and then together. Then she played through the whole song so far for me.

Rather than learn anything new today, she decided to just spend the rest of the lesson practicing that part.

February 10th, 2025

Evelyn wasn't in the mood to work on Welcome to New York, so we went through her book and she played a bunch of past songs.

February 3rd, 2025

Today we added the verse to Welcome to New York. She decided to just work on the first line of it for now, and will add more later.

January 27th, 2025
2025-01-27 18:30:00 Taylor Swift, Welcome To New York

Evelyn worked on YMCA tonight, and then we added a new song by Taylor Swift, "Welcome to New York"

January 20th, 2025

Evelyn played through YMCA for me, and we talked about sections to focus on where she isn't playing in time very well. We spent a good part of the lesson just working on two bars with the chord.

January 13th, 2025

Evelyn hadn't been working on chords for Brahms Lullaby, so we did that again tonight. She was able to do it, although not up to speed.

We then played through some older songs like YMCA, with both hands as well. She's got more self-confidence than she had then, maybe just not commitment to work on it at home.

January 6th, 2025

Evelyn had been working on Brahms's Lullaby, so we went over that with me on chords, but she wasn't comfortable playing chords and melody together, so I asked her to work on that this week.

We then went over Down By The Bay and for this one, she played both hands with chords this time.

I also tuned her Uke for her, and showed Louise how to tune it with an app at home.

December 23rd, 2024

December 16th, 2024

We started off reviewing the D minor chords, as Evelyn didn't remember how to play them. I showed her a system by which she can figure out the minor and major (and sus) chords herself by counting the unused notes between the first two notes of the chord.

We then went back over Make a Difference, playing it with both hands.

After that she played We Wish You a Merry Christmas, an older song, and today we added chords and played through them as well.

December 9th, 2024

December 2nd, 2024

We continued working through "we can make a difference," and I wrote more chords out for her at the end of the verse.
After that I added a bit of the chorus. I'm not sure if there's more after that.

November 25th, 2024

We continued working through Make A Difference. She had forgotten how to play Fsus, so I wrote out a bit more details and we worked through the melody and chords together, especially for the first two bars of the verse.

November 18th, 2024
2024-11-18 18:30:00 Denise Gagne, Make a Difference

Evelyn played through her song - it was still pretty rough, but we decided to change gears and add a new song. She added Make a Difference which I guess is a song from school. Here's the link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGjlkIkQiVs

I wrote out the verse and we went through the two hands separately.

November 4th, 2024

We continued to work through Look What You Made Me Do.

October 28th, 2024

Evelyn is in Brussels, so Gwen is coming in her spot this week.

October 21st, 2024

Evelyn continued to work through Look What You Made Me Do. I'm not sure if she's ready to move on to a new song, or if we should continue working through this one. We'll talk about this next week, and see what she wants to do.

October 7th, 2024

We continued with Look What You Made Me Do today - it's coming along well! I added the left hand note in for the new part.

September 30th, 2024

Evelyn played through Look What You Made Me Do, and we added the next part - which is kind of spoken rather than sung, so it's my take on it.

September 23rd, 2024

We went through Evelyn's song a few times together. I think she may be tiring of this song, I wasn't sure if she was interested the whole lesson. :) If not, perhaps you can help her think of another song to learn.

September 16th, 2024

Evelyn was in great spirits tonight! We continued working on LWYMMD by Taylor Swift, and I wrote out the next part.

September 9th, 2024
2024-09-09 17:30:00 Taylor Swift, Look What You Made Me Do

Evelyn played through Girl On Fire for me, as a way to refresh her memory on piano. We then added a new Taylor Swift song called Look What You Made Me Do:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K0RzZGpyds
We learned the intro and the first part of verse 1.

June 24th, 2024

In Evelyn's lesson we reviewed the songs that she loved over the last year. I recommend she do this weekly at least to help her not to forget many of the things we've learned this year.

June 17th, 2024

I cancelled today.

June 10th, 2024
2024-06-10 00:00:00 Taylor Swift, Shake It Off

Today Louise was running behind so we only had 15 minutes. We added Shake It Off by Taylor Swift on piano.

June 3rd, 2024

We went over A Sky Full of Stars. It wasn't very smooth in transitions, but Evelyn was ready to add a new song.
She chose Halsey, Could Have Been Me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95FyXUHv8hk

May 27th, 2024
2024-05-27 00:00:00 Coldplay, A Sky Full of Stars

Evelyn was really chatty for the first half of the lesson, and I couldn't get her to play... eventually she did, and played it wonderfully when she did! So smooth, and good tempo! Thanks Evelyn!

We then added a new song, by Coldplay called A Sky Full of Stars
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRK_-LNDpcQ

May 13th, 2024

Evelyn was feeling pretty emotional tonight, and had a bit of a melting when I asked her to play. Maybe a hard day at school?

We went through You Are My Sunshine three or four times.

May 6th, 2024
2024-05-06 16:30:00 You Are My Sunshine

May 6th, 2024
2024-05-06 16:30:00 You Are My Sunshine

First we went over I Like to Move It Move It, and then added a new song.

Today we added You Are My Sunshine. Evelyn did really well on playing on the right time, especially once we talked about leaving room for the breath, or 'rest'.

April 29th, 2024
2024-04-29 00:00:00 will i am, I Like to Move It

Evelyn was a bit late today, but it was probably the perfect length of lesson, as she was quite tired to start off with.

She wanted to learn a new song, and decided on I Like to Move it by will i am:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLEQRIisP_Q

April 29th, 2024
2024-04-29 00:00:00 will i am, I Like to Move It

April 22nd, 2024

We played all the way through Love Story, and then I thought we should focus especially on the chorus section. I tried to help Evelyn play in time, so she knows when the chords should change. We worked on that for a bit, but she was tired and broke down before the end of the lesson.

April 15th, 2024

We continued working through Love Story, and I added the chorus for her.

We played through the chorus patterns a few times, encouraging her to commit the pattern to memory to make it easier to play back.

April 8th, 2024
2024-04-08 00:00:00 Taylor Swift, Love Story

Evelyn played through Girls Just Wanna Have Fun a couple of times for me - she has sort of lost the "beat" of it, with again too much pausing between sections. I'm not sure how to help her with that. I hope eventually she starts to get it.

We then added a new song by Taylor Swift called Love Story.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrsqPE9SMxo

March 25th, 2024

Evelyn took her brother's spot again today, and I think the plan is to continue in his spot going forward.

We went through Girls Just Wannna Have Fun a number of times, with both hands and separate hands, and with the bass guitar.

March 18th, 2024

Evelyn did the full hour this week. We continued working on Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and I wrote out the second line of the verse, and showed her how to transition from the end of the verse into the intro again.

March 11th, 2024
2024-03-11 00:00:00 Cyndi Lauper, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Today we started a new song, and also used a good portion of Andrew's time to learn the beginning of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoQhcxIhca8

Good job with the rhythm! See you next week.

March 4th, 2024

Evelyn and Andrew were both quite distracted today, and not too interested in playing music. I was able to get a little bit from Evelyn, but I think because it had been two weeks since I'd seen her last, it was hard for her to remember the things we had been learning.

February 12th, 2024

Evelyn and I worked on I Love Rock 'n' Roll again today, focusing on getting the timing right with both hands.

I think she's making progress, and I think she's feeling good about it.

Reminder: Next week is Family Day, and the following is my anniversary, so no lessons for the next two Mondays.

February 5th, 2024

Evelyn did well today, especially for the first 20 minutes or so. Near the end of the lesson, she didn't seem to want to focus anymore, but I kept trying to get her to play the song for me.

I asked her to focus on not waiting between the E minor and A minor in i Love Rock And Roll.

January 29th, 2024

Evelyn continued her work on I Love Rock 'n' Roll, and we put both hands together. She's doing well!

January 22nd, 2024
2024-01-22 01:00:00 Joan Jett, I Love Rock 'n' Roll

Evelyn wanted to add a new song, so we added Joan Jett, I Love Rock 'n' Roll:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STG7w6h1IrM

January 15th, 2024

We continued with Girl on Fire, and added the next line and the chords in the left hand. We went through it a few times together, gradually getting Evelyn's courage up to put both hands together.
Good job!

January 8th, 2024
2024-01-08 01:00:00 Alicia Keys, Girl on Fire

Evelyn was keen and focused tonight. We started by going over Brahms's Lullaby, and the song she wrote. She's forgotten a bit about reading notes on the staff line, but that's okay- something we can revisit in the future.

We then added a new one, Alicia Keys, Girl on Fire:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4KYRuo1C-o

We only got a bit of the melody written before running out of time, so we can come back to it next week.

December 18th, 2023

Evelyn was teary again tonight. Hope everything is okay!

She didn't have O Christmas Tree, so we tried working on Silent Night, but she wasn't in the mood for some reason. I think maybe she didn't want to go back to reading letters over notes.

We did Spooky Scary Skeleton instead, and I timed her on playing chords and melody to get her a little more fluid in playing. Still not quite there

December 11th, 2023

Evelyn was teary tonight, emotional about her 6 times tables and the third line of O Christmas Tree.

We worked on it for the whole lesson, trying to help her with remembering to not switch out of the G chord for the third bar.

December 4th, 2023

Evelyn did part of Andrew's lesson tonight. We started off by playing through O Christmas Tree (which she did quite well,) and then we added Silent Night. She was quite enthusiastic to play through this one, and though hesitate at first, she eventually did it with two hands as well.
Great job!

November 27th, 2023

Evelyn was a bit emotional today, getting a bit frustrated with me because I was singing along and that distracted her. She then said it was because her class at school was so distracting.

We worked on O Christmas Tree, and then We Wish You a Merry Christmas, also trying to memorize as much as possible.

November 20th, 2023

Played through O Christmas Tree, and then looked in Andrew's book for another song to learn. We'll try What Child Is This next week.

Great job, Evelyn.

November 13th, 2023

Evelyn did very well paying attention and trying hard in music. We printed out O Christmas Tree as sheet music and spent the lesson working through that.

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qbRMJA_ZEic/Trg9LQKxxbI/AAAAAAAAAyo/9PZp5zcxy9w/s1600/o-christmas-tree.png

November 6th, 2023

Evelyn played through the scales for me and is doing very well.
I taught her to do them all the way up, but she wasn't ready to try it with both hands, and only did the right hand.

We then reviewed Spooky Scary Skeleton, which she said she'd forgotten to practise. She also wanted to make up a Remembrance Day Song. We added that to her booklet.

October 30th, 2023
2023-10-30 00:00:00 Spooky Scary Skeleton

Evelyn played through the scales for me, and her faerie song. We also added a new one, called Spooky Scary Skeleton:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVjk5nrb_lI

This is in B minor, and has some more complicated chords (like F# major). But she seems fine with it.

October 23rd, 2023

October 16th, 2023

Evelyn did well tonight! We started out with the faerie song she wrote, playing through hands separately and hands together.

When she tired of that, we moved to scales, and she was able to do hands separately up and down, and hands together in opposite directions. She started hands in the same direction of movement, but will need to work on that this week.

October 2nd, 2023

Evelyn did well with her reading tonight, and we worked through he song a number of times. I asked her to write another verse or two over the next two weeks.

September 25th, 2023

Evelyn played through Wheels on the Bus for me, and then we reviewed the song she wrote, about a Fairie.

We then went over past songs, including YMCA which she seemed to really enjoy!

September 18th, 2023

Evelyn did well today, as we worked on songs in her book, up to the note reading.

We wrote out a made up song about faeries, and she made some lyrics. I encouraged her to learn to play it so we can record it.

September 11th, 2023

Evelyn did a good job today! We reviewed the first five or six songs - I asked her to work on them at home, to sing along with them, and make them sound as musical as possible.

June 26th, 2023

Dixie Land is coming along! We have the whole first page memorized now, and so focus over the summer (if you can find time) is to work on the second page.

June 19th, 2023
2023-06-19 00:00:00

We finished up Yankee Doodle, and added a new one, called Dixie Land.

May 29th, 2023

Today we worked on memorizing the rest of Yankee Doodle. We made it through to the end with 85% memorized.
I think Ev could continue to work on this over the next two weeks.
Remember, I'll be away next week in Saskatchewan.

May 15th, 2023
2023-05-15 00:00:00

Evelyn did well today. We went through a few of the older ones up to Greensleeves... she hadn't been practising the newer ones, just the first one.

We then added a new one, Yankee Doodle.

A reminder to practise with all the fingers.

May 8th, 2023

This was Evelyn's first lesson in the new 3:00 time slot.

We went through her note reading songs together, and added Greensleeves.

This has a number of new things: a key of G means all the 'f' notes are sharped, and there are 'accidentals' -- notes like C# and D# which are occasionally making an appearance.

May 1st, 2023

Evelyn did well on her River song - it took a bit of reminding her, but she's making steady slow progress.

We moved on to the next page today, America the Beautiful.

April 24th, 2023

Evelyn did extremely well with focus today. At the 20 minute mark I let her see the teeny baby fish, and then we went back and finished the piano work.

Today she got a significant portion of the song committed to memory. (Over the River and Through the Woods). See if you can encourage her to memorize the last line now, then put it all together.

April 17th, 2023
2023-04-17 00:00:00

Evelyn brought her first notes book today, and we did the first two: The Old Gray Mare, and Over the River and Through the Woods.

Keep working hard on them, you're doing great!

April 3rd, 2023

We did some more writing on sheet music. I wrote out the first line of Fur Elise. Then she wanted to write out I Love You from Barney. This is a really good exercise for her to write down music herself. Have her go over the songs she already knows and put them in her book.
Don't forget to bring the songbooks for next week and we will try reading real music.

March 27th, 2023

Evelyn played through two songs for me and then we looked at notes some more. First we wrote out some notes and she played them, and then we used this video to practise timing:

https://youtu.be/Qp4flocUmxM

Have fun working on that at home!

March 20th, 2023

Evelyn did very well, staying focused throughout the lesson.

We started with going over her two songs, and then I showed her notes on the staff line.

She stamped out some staff lines to write her own melodies this week. I asked her to make things up, and then try to play it.

My hope is this will help her in memorizing the notes on the staff.

March 6th, 2023

Evelyn did very well tonight, playing through her two songs!

I'll see you in two weeks!

February 27th, 2023

Evelyn was well behaved and attentive tonight.

We went over the songs we have been learning recently. She said she was scared to play with both hands at home, but was able to do so for me very well. I am excited to see what happens with her as she practices with both hands at home more!

February 13th, 2023

Evelyn did a really good job tonight with paying attention and working hard. We went through the Lullaby a number of times, trying to use two hands.

We then added a new song, from Barney, "I Love You." (for Valentines).

February 6th, 2023

Evelyn did well tonight! She played through the melody of Brahms' Lullaby for me, and then I wrote out a left hand part and showed her how to arpeggiate it.

We went through it a few times, trying not to wake her teddy bear. ;-)

January 30th, 2023

Evelyn is sick today.

January 23rd, 2023

Evelyn was tired tonight, but we had a good lesson. She wanted to learn a lullaby so I wrote out the melody for Brahms' Lullaby, to which we'll add chords next week.

January 16th, 2023

Evelyn had a surprise song for me, "We Wish you a Merry Christmas!"

She played that through, and we also did Wheels on the Bus a few times. I tried to encourage her to play without stopping at all, by doing it over and over again.

Evelyn forgot her book this week. :)

January 9th, 2023

Evelyn was distracted tonight, but we managed to get through wheels on the bus a number of times.
I asked her to try to really learn the songs well, to go over the parts she's stopping on and forgetting.

January 2nd, 2023

Evelyn and I went over London Bridge, The Other Day I Saw a Bear, and YMCA. We then added a new one, The Wheels on the Bus.

December 19th, 2022

In lessons today we took it easy and had some fun. Evelyn played through the verse of YMCA for me (not the chorus), and then I wrote out We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

After that, we mostly joked around and chatted.

Have a Merry Christmas!

December 12th, 2022

Evelyn did well tonight. We added the next and final part to YMCA.

December 5th, 2022

Evelyn didn't practice much this week, so we used the lesson time to practice through YMCA. I asked her to try to memorize small portions of it and then put it together.

She even played some of it with both hands without looking at the book.

Keep working!

November 28th, 2022

Evelyn did really well on the scales - good job!

Then we worked on the first two lines of the Other Day I Saw a Bear, just getting her to try to memorize and play them like the song.

See you next week!

November 21st, 2022

Evelyn played through her scale so well this week, but hadn't practiced the bear song. Please practice it this week.

We also added a new song, YMCA! Have fun learning that one!

November 14th, 2022

Evelyn tried hard to stay focused tonight.

We worked on the scales first, going down mostly from the C with both hands.

Then we went over the two songs at the back of her book, There Was an Old Lady and The Other Day I Saw A Bear.

The latter especially needs work and she said she'd practice more this week.

November 7th, 2022

Evelyn played through her scale for me with hands going the same way. She felt frustrated or intimidated by it so we just did the left hand 6 times by itself, and then added the right hand. We did that 5 times by itself and she was able to do much better, the last time not needing any cues from me.

We then played through There Was an Old Lady and The Other Day I Saw A Bear. The latter she hadn't been working on so we practised in the lesson.

October 24th, 2022

Evelyn did the scales with me and we raced to get them done quickly. I think there's improvement coming but it hasn't quite transferred yet to playing the melodies. That's something I'll be focusing on more in the future.

We then went over There Was An Old Lady and after that added a new song, "The Other Day I Saw A Bear"

October 17th, 2022

We went over Old MacDonald together, and the scale, and got it up to 4 seconds to go one direction with both hands. See if you can beat your time!

We went over There Was An Old Lady as well.

October 3rd, 2022

Evelyn was tired tonight. We went through last week's songs. She said she hadn't practiced Old MacDonald, so we did it a few times.

She had been working on the C scale, so we focused on that.

We also added There Was An Old Lady (the first verse).

September 26th, 2022

Evelyn did well today. We went over the two songs from last week, and added Old MacDonald.

We also worked on the C scale.

September 19th, 2022

Good job today, Evelyn. Keep working on London Bridge and Baa Baa Black Sheep.

Also don't forget the scale.

c d e f g a b c
1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5

Go left hand, right hand, and both hands away from each other and toward each other.

September 12th, 2022

We started again with some review, and Evelyn played through a few songs that we had done last year.

We then added a new song, "Old MacDonald."

I also introduced her to the C scale, and how to pass the thumb under, with both hands.

Do you think she would do well if we transitioned to reading notes? We could possibly start working our way through some note reading books if you think she's ready.

June 28th, 2022

Evelyn wrote a song for me (and I helped to structure it a bit like a real song) and we played it through a couple of times.

We then went through O Canada

See you in the fall!

June 21st, 2022

Evelyn played through O Canada for me three times, and got better each time!

We then went over Baa Baa Black Sheep, and she played Jingle Bells.

See you next week for the last week before summer!

June 14th, 2022

Evelyn played through Baa Baa Black Sheep for me a couple of times, and then we looked at Happy Birthday- adding the left hand chords.

We break for the summer, so the 28th is the last lesson.

June 7th, 2022

We went through a few of her songs together... she was tired, but kept her attention up pretty well.

See you next week!

May 31st, 2022

Evelyn was tired tonight from the heat. We started at the front of her book and worked our way through to her most recent songs.

May 24th, 2022

Evelyn played through her songs for me and I multi-tasked tonight- sorry!

May 17th, 2022

Evelyn is sick tonight.

May 9th, 2022

We went through Twinkle Twinkle a few times, trying to get her back to where we were last week, but she was kinda struggling with it. I tried to just be relaxed about it, and help her rebuild her memories.

After a few times through we went through a few other songs from past lessons. It would do her good to review her past songs regularly, so she doesn't forget things we've learned in the past.

See you next week!

May 2nd, 2022

Evelyn did well with memorizing the song tonight. We got through the rest of it fairly well, though not perfect yet... I wrote out the chords for her so she should work on that this week as well.

Good job!

April 25th, 2022

Tonight I added chords to Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Ev played through them for me a few times, first only one hand, and then both. She was able to do it by memory eventually, and that's great.

Next we reviewed Twinkle Twinkle which she was having difficulty memorizing. We went through to 14 notes (the first line), and I asked her to try to go to 25 or 30 notes if she can.

See you next time!

April 11th, 2022

We spent the lesson going through Mary Had a Little Lamb, and I tried to help her get it in her memory, because she kept stopping (either to get a drink, wipe her nose, or to chat with me). I was hoping that working on memorizing would help with getting it all played through.

I think it helped! You can work with her to work on putting the whole song together.

April 4th, 2022

March 28th, 2022

We reviewed the song from last week, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and then added a new one, "Oh Canada."

We went through it a couple of times, and then played over Mary Had a Little Lamb "with feeling."

Good job! Try to memorize O Canada this week if you can!

March 21st, 2022

Evelyn wasn't too keen on going over the later song we'd been learning. We started with reviewing the last four songs or so in order of what she felt was her best, down.

We then went through the scale song from Sound of Music. I wrote out Baa Baa Black Sheep for her, and we talked a bit about what two hands will look like in the future.

March 14th, 2022

Evelyn is at Andrew's birthday party today.

March 7th, 2022

Evelyn is going to a birthday party today.

February 28th, 2022

Evelyn did well staying focused tonight. We went through the Do Re Me song I snuck in and Row Row Row Your Boat at the end.

I added the rest of the Sound of Music song as well.

See you next week!

Evelyn won't be coming today.

January 31st, 2022

Evelyn was tired tonight, even putting her head down on the piano for a minute. She also mentioned a few times that she misses mommy.

I just went with the flow with her, trying to help her stay focused, but not pushing overly hard. I wrote out a "made up" song for her (which was actually Do, Re, Me).

January 24th, 2022

Evelyn played through the song she made up for me, and then we played through her other songs.

Keep working on learning to play the melodies at the right speed.

January 17th, 2022

Evelyn can't make it tonight.

January 10th, 2022

We reviewed the last couple of songs she's been learning, and added a new one, Row Row Row Your Boat.

January 3rd, 2022

We went over Jingle Bells, tried to count an even time - this is going to be an important thing to work on, trying to keep the timing right.

We then added Down By the Bay, and went over it three or four times.

If she memorizes it by next week then we can try it on the keyboard!

December 27th, 2021

Evelyn went over Rudolph for me, and then we reviewed the other songs she's been learning.

There's still a bit of a disconnect between playing through the song like music, as opposed to just how s she's looking at one note at a time. I think memorizing without the music will help her to play it musically.

December 22nd, 2021

Evelyn did a good job in her lesson tonight, paying attention mostly, and working through her songs!

We added a new song, which was a lot longer than other's we've done: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. She should keep working on all her other songs, trying to commit them to memory.

December 13th, 2021

We had a bit of challenge getting Evelyn to want to play. She looked at the keys, and acted as if she didn't know what to play. I wonder in retrospect if she struggles because the names of the keys aren't written on them?

Anyway, if we can get her to practice, try to have her memorize as much of the songs as she can.

December 6th, 2021

Evelyn was tired and itchy tonight, so wasn't quite herself compared to other lessons. I had to keep pressing her to play for me, and she seemed to want to talk about other things, or just try to distract me. :) It was kinda cute, but I wanted to make sure I was honouring you and the money you're spending.

We went over the songs together once or twice and added We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

November 29th, 2021

We went Jingle Bells, Happy Birthday, and even went back to Mary Had a Little Lamb. Then we added Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Try to memorize some of the songs, to make it easier to play.

November 22nd, 2021

We added Jingle Bells and Happy Birthday, and went through them a few times.

We introduced "flats", which are the black keys to the left of the white. So a B flat is the black note left of a B.

November 15th, 2021

Evelyn was a sweetie! We started with learning the names of the notes (ants, bird, cat dog, elephant, flower bed, grandma), and then learned our first song "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

I asked her to play through it three or five times every day until the next lesson. (She said she was having a sleepover Friday and couldn't then, haha, but that's fine!) Practice makes perfect.

Thank you!
