Alyssa Parks
Past Notes
March 9th, 2020
Alyssa did really well today. I thought she might be a little tentative after two weeks ago, but she seemed eager, and she had Happy Birthday down really well.
We played it through a couple of times just to get past the nerves.
We then added Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, another simple one to introduce some new concepts. I put the chords with it, and she played it through with separate hands, and then both hands.
I then showed her the concept of apreggios in the left hand, and how she could play the melody in the right hand, while arpeggiating the left hand.
She did really well on it. She played it through three or four times this way.
We touched on how she might do this with Happy Birthday (which is in 3/4, so requires a different type of arpeggio with only three beats in it).
We also talked briefly about another left hand approach which I called the "Rocker" or "Rocking," because you rock back and forth between parts of the chord.

Alyssa is sick today.

This was Alyssa's first week - we started out by her playing a couple of songs she already knew, that she learned with Darlene.
I then quizzed her on a few basics, like where notes are on the keyboard, and what were flats and sharps, minors and majors.
She didn't really remember anything, except she knew where C and D notes were.
So we talked about note stories - ants, bird, cat, dog, flower bed, grandma, and the dog house / grandma's house.
We then talked about chords, and how many half steps between the first two notes in a major or minor chord.
We then wrote out Happy Birthday, and worked on the chords to go with it. I showed her a pattern to use in the left hand to try to play with the melody.
