Lacy Wagar

Past Notes

March 13th, 2020

Lacy did a really good job today. She said she didn't have a lot of practice this week, just a couple of times, but she played through with both hands for me quite fine.

We added a new song, Taylor Swift, Back to Decembeer:

This is the first introduction to playing chords with the right hand and a bass note with the left hand.

We therefore had to covert topics very briefly like minor and major chords, and fingering for the chords.

Lacy played through Thunder for me, she is doing really well - she was getting tired of going through it for me, and wanted to start learning another song - I don't want her to get discouraged with it, but if she can stay focused, we have a lot to learn in this song yet, and I think it's a good one to learn.

We spent the whole lesson doing it, so I understand that she might just be tired of playing the first lines over and over again.

Lacy did great today! She's such a sweetie.

We went through Old Town Road first, and she had been playing three times for each note instead of two, but that was quickly fixed. I had her go through the part 10 times, and then we moved on.

The next song we picked from her list was Thunder, which is in C, and a good first pop song to learn (better than Old Town Road I think).

I wrote out both hands for her, albeit simply. I just wrote out the first verse, and once she gets that down we can add some more of the song.

I think there's a strike next Friday, unfortunately, so we'll have to see what happens about that.

Lacy played through Mary Had a Little Lamb with both hands, and I was quite impressed with it! Great job Lacy!

She made a list of other songs she'd like to learn, and some of them might be a bit hard for the beginning, but we started with Old Town Road, just the piano part, because it's a good introduction to sharps, and flats, which we haven't coverered yet.

Flats go down, like a flat tire, and sharps go up, like you'd jump up if you were poked with a sharp pin.

Old Town Road has a repeating piano part that goes throughout the song, in Ab, with a Gb - for the remainder of the lesson we worked out how that goes - the left hand on the bottom note and the right hand on the top note.

When she practices, after she has the notes down, she shouldn't pause between the changing notes of the left hand - something to focus on after she's got the comfortable with the notes.

We started with a review of where the dog house, grandma's house, and all the notes are on the piano. She did a good job, though not quite as quick yet as I want her to be... she'll get there fast, thogh, she's a quick study... she can keep testing herself to improve.

Next, Lacy played through Mary Had a Little Lamb for me, and I had her do it a couple of times while I sang, just to help her get the right speed (kids always race through songs, without thinking of the speed you can sing it at).

Next I rewrote it with a simple left hand note, and we worked on that together. First, I played the left hand note while she played the melody, and then vice-versa. Eventually she did it on her own, about three times before we ran out of time.

She should keep working on it, and playing the notes together at the same time, and keeping the speed consistent as much as possible!

It's not Emilee, it's Lacy Wagar (not sure how I got that wrong!) and she's starting today on Piano.

We started it out with an introduction of the piano, the note names of the white keys, and some tricks to help remember. She mentioned taping the names of the notes on her piano at home, but that tends to be a bad idea, because it means kids depend on the tape and writing, and don't memorize the key names and locations.

After quizzing the various places for notes, we wrote out Mary Had a Little Lamb, and the correct fingering for the melody. She played it through four or five times for me, getting smoother each time. This week she should try to memorize the melody, and play it at the right speed, the speed someone would sing it at.

She should also test herself with finding the locations of notes on the keyboard.
