Johnny Knapp-Bain
Past Notes
February 1st, 2022
Started with Boulevard of Broken Dreams, he is doing VERY well on this - nearly there.
Ended with AC DC Back in Black - doing great! Just forgets the crash with the kick sometimes, which gets him backwards on the beat. If he gets that right he'll be close to perfect on it.
Oh, the fill with the hat snare hat snare hat snare, is supposed to be snare hat, snare hat, snare hat.
January 25th, 2022
Johnny played through Boulevard of Broken Dreanms - he said Believer was too hard for him.
After that we tried to find some other songs, but he was feeling intimidated by them -- we tried to find some Foo Fighters songs, but they're a bit fast for him yet.
We settled on Wake Me Up When September Ends:

January 18th, 2022
We reviewed the songs we've been working on in the past, including Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Dance Monkey, Back in Black, and 7 Nation Army.
There was some forgetting there, so definitely some more practice needed, but we're making progress slowly. Good job Johnny!
New song:
Believer by Imagine Dragons:

Johnny said he didn't practice much this week and hadn't worked on any of the new songs.
If you get this email, perhaps you can set him up to practice? He should try to at least five times a week, and ideally everyday.
Thanks!

We went over Dance Monkey three times, and then added Boulevard of Broken Dreams:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Rnh_yKE3I&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
He said he didn't think he was allowed to use the YouTube videos while he was practicing - I hope you'll consider making an exception, and helping him get set up to play along with these tutorials. They'll really help! :)
Also he said that he thought his snare was in the wrong place. Is it possible to move those drums around?
December 21st, 2021
Johnny played through his songs for me, and then we added Seven Nation Army - at first he said it was too hard, but he actually did really well on it.
Have a Merry Christmas!
December 14th, 2021
Johnny and I played through his songs together. Even though he's not able to practice, he is getting a bit better every week. I can't wait to see how he does when he's got a drum kit!
We added one more song, called Dance Monkey:

I always forget his brother's name when he comes at the end, so my reminder: Wesley!
See you next week!
December 7th, 2021
Johnny had to be sent home for a covid test so won't be coming tonight.
November 30th, 2021
We started out with We Will Rock You as a review:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=S-5YBTyrlNE
Then Back in Black:

Then back to Circles:

We then added Yellow by Coldplay:

November 23rd, 2021
We went through Circles twice and then continued working on Back In Black. I sure wish he had his own kit to practice! He's coming along. We worked on the parts that he was struggling with, and took the hat out for now until he's got the other parts better, and not speeding up.
November 16th, 2021
We went through Circles three times, and then added a new song, "Back in Black,"
https://youtu.be/Kiq9HDUkNxg
This is a 4 year old drummer, and totally within Johnny's abilities. He should try to work on it a bit by bit.
November 9th, 2021
We reviewed the drums beats (8th and quarter), and played along with circles again.
Then I showed him the basics of reading drum music... using the following video for Circles:
https://youtu.be/P69ooyukIKs
This shows him how to play the various parts that he might not otherwise "hear."
We played it through a few times, focusing on a few of the more challenging areas. It's easy to get backwards with the snare and kick - so watch that.
With practice he'll get it.
November 2nd, 2021
Johnny is unable to make it to lessons tonight.
October 26th, 2021
We worked on the quarter note and the eighth note drum beats for most of the lesson, and then added a new song today for Johnny to practice:
Post Malone, Circles

October 19th, 2021
P Johnny doesn't have his drum set yet, so we continued working on this stuff we worked on last week. We reviewed the quarter note and eighth note beats, putting crashes on Beat one, Tom Tom's on Beat three and four, and stuff like that. Once he has a drum set will be able to take bigger steps in learning I think, since he will have practice and be ready.
October 12th, 2021
Johnny did really well with last week's quarter-note beat. We added an eigth note beat this week, and practiced it for a while.
We then went back to the quarter note, and added crashes on beat 1. After working on that for a while we added a tom on beat 4, followed by the crash on beat one.
October 5th, 2021
Johnny started drums this week instead of guitar.
We did the names of them: tom toms, snare, kick, floor tom, ride, high hat and crash.
We also worked on the four-four beat with the hat on every beat.
At home, until you have a kit, practice with upside down pails or pots and pans... you can even just use your knees and the floor to simulate playing.
Here's a visual representation of the song:

KICK SNARE KICK SNARE
October 22nd, 2019
Johnny struggled a bit this last week, so we took our time to review the chords we'd been working on, and added "Jingle Bells," and sang through it together.
We did the "racing" to play the chords as fast as we can, which makes it easier to play songs that require quick changing of chords.
We added The Tragically Hip, "Ahead By a Century," which is mostly the chords D and C.
October 15th, 2019
Johnny is sick today.
October 8th, 2019
Johnny forogt his book this week, so we had to kind make up things to do in the lesson, but he sort of remembered the Happy Birthday chords - we went through it once or twice, and then added some new chords: C, A, and F - we may have added E too, I can't remember now.
We did some races to see how fast he could get his fingers into position.
The C and F chords are a little hard for him to reach, but with a smaller fret board he might find it easier.
October 1st, 2019
Today we reviewed the G chord and the Eminor chord, trying to beat his time. G was about 4 seconds, the E minor 3 seconds.
We added A minor and D.
We also learned Happy Birthday. Johnny's birthday is on the 19th of October.
September 24th, 2019
Today was Johnny's first lesson.
We learned the names of the guitar parts - neck, body, head, tuning pegs, nut, bridge, strings, sound hole, frets and fret board, etc.
We then learned how to play a G chord and an E minor chord.
Johnny should practice 10 minutes every day, trying to beat his time to play the chords, and to remind himself of the names of the guitar parts.
