Cooper Hawkins

Past Notes

October 25th, 2019

Cooper said there was something he was supposed to tell me, but he couldn't remember what it was. Can you let me know?

Today in music we tried to work through Happy Birthday and the chords, but I couldn't get Cooper to keep playing, he just wanted to talk. :)

I'm not sure if he's just trying to distract me, or is a chatterbox, but it makes for a challenging half-hour. Perhaps you can ask him to take the lessons more seriously?

Also a reminder that payment is overdue. Thanks!

Today was a bit more challenging than usual for Cooper. He didn't seem to want to cooperate to play the chords I asked him to play, and it seemed to me he tried to distract me from working on the music.

I wanted to work through Happy Birthday with him, but he wasn't really interested in playing it all the way through. At one point we got half way but then he just stopped again.

He said he practiced every day this week, which is great - he may be just practicing the wrong things (or the easier things). Try to have him work on playing the chords and switching between them as quickly as possible so that there is less of a delay in playing through songs when it becomes time to switch chords.

He's sure darn cute tho! :)

Cooper would like to learn piano too, I told him I need mom's permission, so just email me back sometime before next lesson on Friday. He would have to get a piano or keyboard for practicing. He says he doesn't have one right now. It's not really worth teaching piano if he cannot practice at home.

We started the lesson by learning the D chord. Cooper seemed to really struggle with it, it didn't seem to matter how many times we did it, he still forgot how to do it.

We then reviewed the G chord and the E minor chord, and then played through Happy Birthday until we came to the C chord.

I wrote out the C for him, and we ran out of time to continue working on it.

I'm not certain how much practicing actually occured this week, but my expectation is that the student practices at least 5 minutes every day.

We wrote the music and the picture of the guitar into Cooper's book.

He didn't remember the chords we were working on very well from last week, so we went over them again. If he can practice every day that will make a big difference to his satisfaction in playing.

We did the races again to beat his own time in playing the G chord and the C chord. We also worked on strumming.

I wrote out Happy Birthday, but we ran out of time before we could go through it together.

(Cooper is in Mrs. Gee's class.)

Cooper is such a serious, smart boy! It was fun to teach him today.

Please remember to bring a booklet next time for writing in.

We learned the names of the parts of the guitar, and Cooper drew a picture of a guitar for naming those parts.

We learned the G chord and strummed it, and tried to get the fingering right in less than 10 seconds. Same for the E minor.
