Nia Bartram

Past Notes

April 22nd, 2025

Nia is playing at her great grandmother's funeral in a couple of weeks, so we went through "Amazing Grace" about 20 times to prepare.

She won't be here next week, but at a Jay's game.

2025-04-15 18:30:00 Olivia Rodrigo, Obsessed

We went over Can't Catch Me Now a couple of times, at 65% speed, and then switched songs to Obsessed.

April 8th, 2025

Nia isn't able to make it tonight.

April 1st, 2025

We wrote out the next part of the verse in Can't Catch Me Now, and practised it for most of the lesson. She's coming along, at a lot slower speed than the song, so she might need to spend more time practising it to get it up to the speed of the original song.

2025-03-25 18:30:00 Olivia Rodrigo, Can't Catch Me Now

We started out with review of good 4 u. Nia keeps choosing hard songs, and I think it's making it a challenge for her to really excel and get fluid with any song. She insists this is what she wants, so we'll keep going this way (unless you want to intervene).

We added Can't Catch Me Now and tried it first without a capo which she really struggled with, and then with a capo on 2.

March 18th, 2025

Nia is unable to come tonight.

March 11th, 2025

Nia did well today, we've made progress. We spent a good part of the lesson doing practise of the bass run at the beginning. I also wrote out a new part which is after the chorus chords.

We went through it at 75% speed a few times before running out of time.

2025-03-04 19:30:00 Olivia Rodrigo, good 4 u

We played through Enough For You, and added good 4 u also by Olivia Rodrigo

2025-02-25 19:30:00 Olivia Rodrigo, Enough For You

Nia played through Get Him Back for me, and we then added a new one, Enough for You also by Olivia Rodrigo.

It's pretty fast on the chord change speed, so we slowed it down to 60% to play along with the recording.

2025-02-18 19:30:00 Olivia Rodrigo, Get Him Back

We went through Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl, and I wrote out the second section, which is really hard for a beginner. We went through it once and Nia decided to try adding a new song. We added the next one in her list, Oliva Rodrigo, Get Him Back!

2025-02-11 19:30:00 Olivia Rodrigo, Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl

Nia decided to take a break from Scare of My Guitar, and we added Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl. This seems to only have 2 chords in it (at least so far), so it's easier in that respect, but it's quite fast. We slowed it down to half-speed, but it was still too fast for Nia.

Note that it requires a capo to play in the same key as the recording. You can get capos on Amazon or any local music store.

February 4th, 2025

We continued working through Scared of My Guitar, and I tried to write out the bridge - not sure I got it quite right, but it'll do for now.

January 28th, 2025

We spent the majority of the lesson just working through the last line - I think it's the chorus - of the song, working out the fingerings, and trying to get it more "rote." It's coming along!

January 21st, 2025

We added the chorus to Scared of My Guitar. It has a lot of hard parts and chords with different bass notes to them, but Nia wanted to learn them all, so I did my best to write them in a way I thought she could do.
We also added a hammer-on to the verse getting into the F# on the D chord.

2025-01-14 19:30:00 Olivia Rodrigo, Scared of My Guitar

We reviewed Maroon together, and Nia is doing well - just a little behind on the count, which is normal, but something we need to work on.

We then added a song by Olivia Rodrigo, called Scared of My guitar:

This has some harder parts in it, and a special tuning, but we are learning a simplified version.

January 7th, 2025
2025-01-07 19:30:00 Taylor Swift, Maroon

We reviewed Circles to start, and then added a new song by Taylor Swift, called Maroon.

This one has the chords changing a bit faster, but there's only one strum in each bar, so there's lots of time to switch once she gets smooth at it.

2024-12-23 15:00:00 Post Malone, Circles

Nia came instead of her brother tonight. We started with reviewing the part names she struggled with last week. Still forgetting the bridge vs the saddle, so we'll do that for a bit more.

We then reviewed all the chords to date and played them each for sixteen beats, and then the chord progression we wrote out last time.

After that, we learned the F major 7 chord, and tried out the song by Post Malone called Circles.

Merry Christmas!

December 17th, 2024

Today we reviewed the parts of the guitar, and Nia remembered them all, but just a little hesitant on fretboard, bridge, and saddle.

We then went over all the chords she's learned so far, and also added two new ones: A minor and C.

I made a little "song" for us to play through the chords in an order... I asked her to work on playing through them at home and to try to keep time.

December 10th, 2024

Nia's family had some car trouble tonight, and she was unable to make the lesson.

December 3rd, 2024

We learned the parts of the guitar, and then the chords E minor, G, and G, and strummed along on the chords with a drum beat to help with timing.
