Simon Jones
Past Notes
January 30th, 2024
Simon has decided to stop taking lessons.
January 23rd, 2024
Simon struggled quite a bit with timing tonight. I tried to really simplify the counting, first slowing the video down, then stopping it and counting it manually. Even after that, which seemed like we made progress, he had trouble playing with the recording.
I tried turning it up for him, as he said he was having trouble hearing it. That might have helped a bit.
We then tried playing a quarter note beat on the kit, and I gave him cues for volume changes, and ride/hihat changes.
Finally, I had him counting out loud and playing just the kick on count "1" and "3" and then just the snare on count "2" and "4", and then putting it together.
It's still a struggle for him, but hopefully he can practise this at home

Simon did really well tonight. We just took our time, and went through the Reading Exercise over and over, without playing it - just looking at the screens and me talking him through it.
We also found this, which might help to review from time to time:

Cancelled due to weather.

Great job tonight, Simon! I hope you enjoyed it like I did. Keep working on memorizing what the different positions on the lines mean, and see how far you can get through the sight reading test for beginners.
Also work on that drum beat, playing it at even speeds (use a metronome, or play along with a song to be sure you're not speeding up).
See you next time!

This was Simon Jones' first week. We covered things like the names of the drums (hi hat, snare, kick, high tom tom, mid tom tom, and floor tom, snare, crash and ride).
We also did a bit on holding drum sticks, how to play a drum roll, a quarter note beat played on the hat and on the ride, and some reading exercises.
Here's the reading exercise:

It was good to meet you! Merry Christmas, See you in TWO weeks!
