Tom Nagy

Past Notes

August 29th, 2023

August 22nd, 2023

Tom is doing well. He found some chord videos on YouTube which he was able to play along with. We found a few others, and played through them together. Timing is one of the next areas to focus on, especially on trying to count while playing.

Tom is getting more comfortable with finding the positions on the neck (1 through 6). We went through Here I Am to Worship together a few times, and talked more about the repeats and endings.

2023-07-25 00:00:00 U2, Where the Streets Have No Name
2023-07-25 00:00:00 Blessed Assurance, Oh What a Saviour

We worked again on where to change the chords, first on Here I Am to Worship, and then on Blessed Assurance.

Playing at home with a drum track is the easiest way to work on timing. Remember the slashes mark each beat (/)

I accidentally applied the notes to the wrong week, so resaving here:

Tom expressed some confusion about where to change notes, and how to know where he was in the song / on the beat. We talked through the basics of bars, and where the bar lines are (the pipe character in my charts: |). Each slash represents a count, 1, 2, 3, 4 (/ / / /)

We then played through the songs without singing to help make it clearer where the beats change, and then I started adding some bits of phrases, trying not to throw him off to much.

I think we made good progress, and we're well on our way!

I printed out a worship song for him to learn as well, Here I Am to Worship (I think).

We started off with some really basic elements, the names of the parts of the bass, and the number system for a major scale. I wrote out a couple of U2 songs with numbers, one in D and one in C.
If the one in C is the wrong key, see if you can find the right place on the neck to play along with the recording.
See you next week!
