Aidan Risto
Past Notes
November 22nd, 2021
This was Aidan's last lesson.
To make the last lesson fun, we talked about blues, and how to play the blues on a guitar using E, A, and B7. I showed him the standard blues thing on the bottom three strings.
Hopefully hockey lightens up for Aidan, because he was a pleasure to teach.

Aidan did really well in switching from G to C - I think we timed it at 1.4 seconds perhaps?
other chord switches he did at .56 seconds, which is terrific.
We played through Save Your Tears a few times, and then added Shivers by Ed Sheeran. It is fairly easy, but he has the B minor again, which he needs to get a bit faster on.
He said next week will be his last lesson. Is that correct?

Aidan has been working on switching between C and Am, and has really improved there. I would like him to work more this week on going from G to C, so we can complete the circle for the song.
He's close!

Aidan played through his chords for me, and then we tried Ed Sheeran at 60% speed. He's doing much faster on the G, and the B minor is gettin better too. Try not to tip the guitar toward you when you're switching to B minor, as it slows you down a lot.
We then added a new song, by the Weeknd, Save Your Tears:

It's got a new chord, C:
[: C / / / | Am / / / | Em / / / | G / / / :]

Aidan will be missing the lesson today.

We reviewed the chords that Aidan has been working on. He found B minor the hardest, but he's doing well on them all overall.
After that, we wrote out the chords for Bad Habits, making it a bit simpler by removing the D chord and using only B minor for four beats to G for four beats:
Bm / / / | G / / / |
In the above, each of the slashes represents beats 2, 3, and 4 (with the chord being on beat 1).

Today in Aidan's lesson we started with the names of the parts of the guitar (adding cut out), and then went over the two chords he learned last week.
We did a "racing" game to get fast at switching chords. I timed him to see how long he would take to shape a chord with his hand on his knee. We then timed switching from chords
G to Em
Em to G
G to Am
The girst song we're learning is Ed Sheeran's Bad Habits:

To learn this song, we'll need to add two new chords: A and Bm
Try to practice a bit every day.

Today was Aidan's first week of guitar.
We started with learning the names of the parts of the guitar, and then talked about our first chord, E minor.
Aidan was able to play this fairly well for his first week, but struggled with the second chord, G.
G isn't an easy chord to learn, but I like to teach it early because it helps the student understand that it's not all simple and easy. Hopefully after a few chords, he'll find it easier to place his fingers on the correct strings.

Aidan isn't coming until next week.
