Ethan Scheulderman
Past Notes
April 14th, 2025
We used the downstairs piano this week because my middle C is broken.
I showed him how one can place a piece of paper on the strings of a grand piano to get a buzzy sound, and he played through Imagine and Rocket Man with that effect
April 7th, 2025
Tonight we did:
Bob Dylan, Ballad of a Thin Man
Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited
Elton John, Can You Feel the Love Tonight
March 31st, 2025
Ethan played through Bob Dylan, Ballad of a Thin Man again three or four times, working on putting both hands together.
March 24th, 2025
Ethan was away at his dad's for the last while and was excited to tell me about his dad's sampler and the experience he had sampling with him. He also had been doing Daft Punk songs and Bob Dylan songs also. We played a couple of Dylan songs in his lesson time.
He also said he'd write a review for me.
March 17th, 2025
Ethan isn't back from his vacation yet today.
March 10th, 2025
Ethan is away this day.
March 3rd, 2025
Ethan is away this day.
February 24th, 2025
Ethan and I worked through the chords for Woman again, by John Lennon. He played it on the piano and I called out chords for him as we were going, and helped him figure them out.
February 10th, 2025
Ethan played me his song, that he'd been recording with his "Moog" emulator, called Georgio by Marauder, Daft Punk.
We then spent the rest of the lesson playing Woman by John Lennon on the piano.
February 3rd, 2025
Ethan is not coming tonight because of the roads. No charge tonight.
January 27th, 2025
Ethan brought his new phone, and played through some of the songs he's been arranging. I tried to get him to move it to more lesson format, by encouraging him to play them on the piano, but I think he wasn't interested in that tonight. :) Maybe next week! Great job on the arrangements! Especially the Transformers one!
January 20th, 2025
Looks like maybe Ethan isn't coming again tonight.
January 13th, 2025
I missed seeing Ethan tonight. Hope everyone's healthy!
January 6th, 2025
Ethan wanted to record Imagine today, so we did that with vocals first, singing along with a Karaoke track. Next week he wants to add piano.
December 30th, 2024
Ethan played on my electric piano today, starting out with Hey Jude, using my Bright Yamaha Grand sound from QSynth.
He then wanted to switch to the acoustic piano and did Elton John, Imagine.
We then looked at Stevie Wonder, Superstition for a little while.
December 23rd, 2024
I cancelled tonight because of the snow.
December 16th, 2024
Ethan returned to Woman today (which I'm glad about - he's very close to being able to do it). We just slowed everything down, and did a few chords at a time, and repeated them over and over again, only adding the next two chords when he was confident and ready to move on.
I wrote them out for him so he would remember what they were to practise them. I didn't write out the chorus chords, although we did touch on them near the end of the lesson, so we can revisit that next week.
December 9th, 2024
December 2nd, 2024
Ethan said he hadn't worked on the guitar parts we learned in last lesson for Woman, but we tried going through them together again. He felt frustrated with remembering the switches, and his fingers weren't cooperating, so he thought he'd go back to the piano.
Before that tho, he wanted to show me Lucky Chops, Buyo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFrCyU_1zw0
This has some great chords in it, so I showed him how to play them on the guitar (E9 and E11, A9).
We did that for the rest of the lesson.
November 25th, 2024
Ethan didn't come again tonight.
November 18th, 2024
Ethan didn't come tonight.
November 4th, 2024
Ethan decided he didn't want to learn Your Song anymore... we switched to the guitar this week, and I showed him the first six or eight chords to Woman, by John Lennon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPR1hhTM8hg
October 28th, 2024
Today we talked about Ethan's plans to buy a suzephone, and he played my trumpet a bit.
At the end of the lesson he wanted to learn the piano part of Your Song by Elton John. We ran out of time doing it, but we'll look at it again next week.
October 21st, 2024
I think Ethan may have forgotten to come tonight... :) See you next week!
October 7th, 2024
Ethan worked through Saturday Night's Alright on piano for the whole lesson.
Here's a direct link to the album version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhnZEmnuzgM
September 30th, 2024
Ethan has been working on vocals over the summer, and wanted to show me. He sang through Imagine by John Lennon, as well as Now and Then, and then Your Song by Elton John!
He said next week he'd like to get back to practising the piano.
September 23rd, 2024
Ethan is sick today.
September 16th, 2024
Ethan is feeling unwell after an EEG today and won't be coming in.
September 9th, 2024
Ethan is sick today.
June 25th, 2024
Ethan is at his dad's this week.
June 18th, 2024
I believe Ethan isn't coming in today because he's at his dad's.
June 11th, 2024
Today Ethan chatted most of the lesson about the Travelling Wilburys and his plan to buy an SJ200.
He said he isn't playing that guitar I fixed for him yet, so I said to bring it back and I'll replace the missing pin and get some new strings for him. He said it will have to be in the fall.
June 4th, 2024
Ethan learned and recorded the piano part on Wildflowers today. We got it almost done before running out of time.
May 28th, 2024
In Ethan's lesson today he decided to rerecord the bass track through the instrumental, and we then added warm pad keyboards through whole song.
For next week, he'd like to add an electric piano part in the later part of song.
May 21st, 2024
Ethan recorded another acoustic guitar track on Wildflowers, and was struggling with the rhythm - he said it's because he has a disability in his thumb.
We added bass after that but ran out of time before finishing the bass track.
May 14th, 2024
Ethan wasn't in the mood to record or do any of his regular songs this week, but thought he'd like to learn Penny Lane on the bass.
We found a good tab video for bass to learn it, but after trying it for a while he said it was too hard, and would like to try the piano part.
Bass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0xwH7Rfhis
Piano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MrTKsou1F4
We looked at a tutorial for that, but then he decided to just play Imagine by John Lennon.
May 7th, 2024
Ethan didn't want to record this week - he said he was too annoyed by all the Taylor Swift he's had to listen to.
She we played through his favourite Elton John and John Lennon songs.
April 30th, 2024
Ethan is feeling unwell today.
April 23rd, 2024
We listened through Rocketman, made some small adjustments to timing, and then decided to record a new song.
He wanted to record Tom Petty, Wildflowers. We started with the recording as the framework to help with not losing his place, and added two guitar parts and a vocal part before running out of time.
April 16th, 2024
Ethan wanted to add more auto correction to his vocals, to make it sound even more robotic(!) so I added another vocal tuner plugin and tweaked it so it's snapping to the notes more.
He then recorded some pads/strings for the song, and we worked through the drums, piano, and bass, and tried to fix areas where the tempo was sliding around some.
For the next recording, I suggested to him that we record along with the original recording to help keep on the beat.
April 9th, 2024
We continued working on Ethan's recording, and re-recorded his vocals.
April 2nd, 2024
Ethan is sick today.
March 26th, 2024
We recorded French Horns, acoustic guitar, and beginning vocals for his song. Lauren recorded drums after he left.
March 19th, 2024
Ethan recorded piano and then bass today for Rocket Man. Next week we'll record vocals and keyboards.
Lauren Hunt has agreed to play drums for it, and is learning it this week too.
March 12th, 2024
Ethan played through a bunch of songs again today. I joined him on the drums this time. We then talked about his favourite guitar by Tom Petty.
We did Elton John (Rocket man I think?), Beatles, and Wildflowers.
March 5th, 2024
I missed Ethan today, but I think Tammy told me he'd be away this week.
February 27th, 2024
Ethan will be away today.
February 20th, 2024
Ethan won't be coming today. He is unwell.
February 13th, 2024
Today in Ethan's lesson we worked on Elton John, Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhnZEmnuzgM
February 6th, 2024
Ethan brought his uke bass again, and we played through Come Together some more, then Tiny Dancer, and then Imagine.
January 30th, 2024
Today we worked on Penny Lane and Come Together by the Beatles.
January 23rd, 2024
Ethan brought his Uke bass, but the batteries were dead in it, so we couldn't hear it very well.
We went over Tiny Dancer together with me first on Uke, then guitar, and him on his little bass.
January 16th, 2024
We played through Paul McCartney's new song, Now and Then, and then we played Penny Lane, Ebony and Ivory, Superstition.
January 9th, 2024
January 2nd, 2024
Ethan didn't know what to play today, but we jammed a bit on acoustic guitars. He also talked a bit about football, soccer, and rugby.
I suggest that he think of a few songs he'd like to learn or play through for next time. :)
Happy New Year!
December 19th, 2023
Ethan didn't seem to be in a mood to play music today. He decided to play Wonderful Christmastime again after a while, and then spent a while just looking for the right sound on my synthesizer. He didn't find it, so we didn't get much music done today.
Next week I'm off for Boxing Day, so see you in two weeks!
Paul McCartney, Wonderful Christmastime
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TfWo3GsIII
December 12th, 2023
Ethan played piano today. We went through his favourite songs by Elton John.
December 5th, 2023
Ethan wanted to start a Christmas song for the new season, so we added Tom Petty, Christmas All Over Again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPoHul8ngNw
This is a tricky one! We tried on guitar first, but the diminished 7 chords were too hard, so we moved to piano.
November 28th, 2023
Ethan wanted to play through the new Beatles song, so we did that first, and then we looked at his black acoustic guitar that I repaired again, and he retuned it. We then played Rocket Man on the guitars.
He then asked me what I thought of the new Beatles song, and described the process they used to get John's voice restored from cassette.
See you next time!
November 21st, 2023
Ethan missed tonight. Tammy had a hard time getting to Sydenham from Sharbot Lake because of the icy weather.
November 14th, 2023
Ethan brought the baritone ukulele again, and we played through:
Hey Jude
(we tried) Sir Duke
(and started for a minute) Wildflowers
November 7th, 2023
When Ethan first arrived, we worked on his black guitar - I used a wooden pin I made, which doesn't quite fit, but is a little big. The guitar is working, but he wanted to leave it and take it home next week I guess.
He brought his ukulele in, and we did Rocket Man, Imagine and Hey Jude before running out of time.
October 24th, 2023
We shaped the nut and glued it, and then added the strings. One of the pins was broken so wouldn't seat well... it might be worth buying new strings and pins for this guitar too.
I kept it this week, I'll see if I can make this broken pin work, and you can decide if you want to buy a new set.
October 10th, 2023
Ethan brought an old guitar for me to fix - it's got a broken neck, and I don't have the right kind of glue (hide glue), but if you don't mind, I can use wood glue to try to fix it up. Let me know.
He wanted to do Radiohead, No Surprises, and used my older acoustic guitar to play through it. It's recorded half-way between E and F, so he couldn't really play it along with the recording.
October 3rd, 2023
Ethan didn't bring an instrument, but he brought a song he said he'd recorded - we then played it through on guitars a few times (he used my extra guitar).
He's really interested in C tuning on a guitar, so he tuned my other guitar that way to show me how he can play those cards on the Radiohead song.
September 19th, 2023
Ethan brought his guitar in today, tuned to a C chord, and played some Imagine for me first, and then Tom Petty, Free Fallin'
I showed him what a dobro was, and we listened to a recording of a dobro (since it's also tuned to an open chord).
I suggested we try recording him playing the guitar with the open tuning, and adding in melody on another instrument. Not sure what he thought of that.
September 12th, 2023
Today we played Jolene by Dolly Parton. Ethan brought his baritone Uke and I played on the guitar, capo 4.
September 5th, 2023
Ethan brought his big Uke today, and we talked through some different chords in songs he's learned / learning. I was quite impressed with his knowledge of it, great job. A very nice instrument.
We also played some of the regular songs we have been learning (Elton John, Beatles, etc).

This is a fun song, and it has his two favorite artists in it! Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder!
August 8th, 2023
August 8th, 2023
Sorry to hear about your dog's passing. Ethan said it meant he didn't have time to practise - we're going to give up on learning The Mandalorian.
Instead worked on While My Guitar Gently Weeps:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSAjFV7Hh8U
and
With A Little Help From My Friends
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C58ttB2-Qg
Here are the chords:
E / E/D# / | A/C# / F#m / | F#m / B / | E / A/B / |
August 1st, 2023
August 1st, 2023
Ethan has obviously practised this week! Great job. He said his family finally left him along this week so he could practise.
He still forgot to work on the parts for The Mandelorian.
Maybe next time?
July 25th, 2023
July 25th, 2023
Ethan played through his songs again for me, but struggled a lot more than usual with remembering the chords in the various sections. I challenged him again to spend more time practising. I asked if he was still interested in lessons and he said he was - and so I reminded him that he should work more if he'd like to keep going with me. :D
He had some excuses about not practising - he would wake his sister, he's at NLL, he's stressed about losing money yesterday, etc. etc. but in the end it's just something he has to commit to.
He left before I remembered to give him a headphone adapter.
July 18th, 2023
July 18th, 2023
I accidentally applied the notes to the wrong week. Here they are again on the right week:
Tonight we played through:
Little Help From My Friends
Tiny Dancer

July 11th, 2023
We went down to the grand piano today, and Ethan played through a lot of his favourite songs for me.
July 4th, 2023
July 4th, 2023
We went through a few songs together, and talked about Euphoniums etc. He wants to try recording a version of the Mandalorian and said he'd write out sheet music to try to play it with.
June 27th, 2023
We worked on the Mandalorian and Benny and the Jets for the lesson. At the end we returned to Tiny Dancer for a while.
June 20th, 2023
We played through the various parts in The Mandalorian and then returned to Benny and the Jets, which I think he forgot to work on.
June 13th, 2023
Today we reviewed Elton John, Tiny Dancer, and then added Benny and the Jets.
May 30th, 2023
We had a good lesson today, working on some Elton John and John Lennon songs. Next week I'm in Saskatchewan, so the following Tuesday is the next lesson.
Thanks!
May 23rd, 2023
Ethan wasn't able to come this evening.
May 16th, 2023
Ethan can't make it tonight.
May 9th, 2023
Ethan isn't able to make it tonight.
May 2nd, 2023
We continued with Can You Feel the Love Tonight. I think Ethan may have forgotten to practise or something, because it was a struggle, but we'll work on it again next week.
We then ended the lesson by going over a few of his other favourites, Wild Flowers and Imagine.
April 25th, 2023
Ethan added "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," by Elton John. I wrote out the chords for him on a piece of paper (he photographed it for practising).
He did well tonight! I look forward to hearing this song when it's completed.
See you next week.
April 18th, 2023
Ethan and I learned the chords to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. We learned the version by Elton John.
There's still an Ab section we haven't quite got figured out yet.
April 11th, 2023
I missed Ethan tonight!
April 4th, 2023
Ethan had a new arrangement of a Metallica song that he played for me. He had forgotten the sheet music for it, so he played it from memory. Then he played through an Elton John song and a Beatles song. He had forgotten to work on Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Your Song, by Elton John.
I asked him to try to work on those songs for next week.
March 28th, 2023
Ethan did a great job learning Imagine today! This is a good approach, to ask him to learn a song that he's already into.
I suggested he learn Your Song by Elton John for next week.
March 21st, 2023
Ethan played through his favourite repertoire of Elton John and Beatles songs for me again.
I suggested this week that he try to learn Imagine, by John Lennon.
March 7th, 2023

February 28th, 2023
We went through Saturday Night's Alright together, working out the chords.
Ethan loves this song!!!
February 21st, 2023
Ethan and I worked through piano again today. He played many of his favourite songs again.
I'd like us to start working on something new, but Ethan isn't sure what he'd like to learn, or what his favourite song is... I would like him to think about it for next time.
February 14th, 2023
Ethan played through the songs he's been working on lately, and showed me the song he's writing. He asked me to make a video to send his dad.
He also told me that his long-time girlfriend committed suicide, which is so sad! Sorry to hear, Ethan.
February 7th, 2023
We went down to the grand piano again today, and Ethan played me the verse of the song he's working on as well as playing through Hey Jude again.
He wants to meet some other musicians, to maybe ask them to join his band. :) I told him there are lots of musicians at my church - and he might have luck convincing some of them.
We've got about four drummers, five bass players, five or six guitar players, pianists, etc.
January 31st, 2023
Ethan and I worked through a number of his recent songs together. We had a bit of a debate on the chord pattern in Let It Be, and he's going to check it out when he gets home. :-D
January 24th, 2023
Ethan played a song he had notated in MuseScore... it sounded great! We then talked about the process of song writing, and how he might try to write some songs like this himself.
I recommended he try that as homework this week, using the Circle of Fifths and patterns, themes, motifs, and groups of 2, 4, and 8.
January 17th, 2023
I guess Ethan isn't coming this week either. :)
January 10th, 2023
Ethan won't be here on the 10th, as his parents are going on a trip.
January 3rd, 2023
We went over our songs together again, and added Wildflowers again.

Ethan has a cold tonight.
December 6th, 2022
Ethan will be gone December 6th and 13th
November 29th, 2022
We continued working through Wonderful Christmas Time. It took a bit of reworking his chorus he'd been practicing that incorrectly, but that didn't take long. We then played along with the recording at 75%.
He should try to get it up to 100% speed.
He said he'd be in Florida for the next two weeks. Have a great time!

The two songs that Ethan played on piano tonight by Tom Petty were Running Down a Dream and Wild Flowers.
Before that we went over Tiny Dancer once too.
November 1st, 2022
Ethan wanted to play Tiny Dancer again on the grand piano, so we went downstairs to do that for the lesson.
He said he's ready to learn a new song by Tom Petty, apparently there are some on the piano.
October 25th, 2022
I showed Ethan a chart I made of Tiny Dancer for another student yesterday, and encouraged him to play it through. I've got the sense he was a bit intimidated by reading charts in the past, but we worked through it together, and he did well on it!
I'll send the link via Gmail after I send this.

Ethan played through the song he learned this week, which was Tom Petty, Runnin' Down a Dream:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1D3a5eDJIs
After that he wanted to play some trombone with me, but we couldn't really sync up the Zoom meeting.
He played through another song on his trombone that he wanted to show me.
As we did last week, please pick a new song to learn and show me next week. Hopefully we can meet in-studio.

First Ethan played the trombone for me, he'd learned some Trombone parts to How Dare You Want More. I love the enthusiasm!!
After that he played through his work on the guitar for the same song.
Ethan is working on the bar chord E shape we did a couple of weeks ago - it sounds good. I showed him the A shape and he played it through a bit.
I suggested we start a new song, but he couldn't think of one he wanted to learn... I suggested that he pick one on his own, and show me it next week.

Ethan played through Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and really did well, although not with bar chords, he avoided them by using a capo.
He said he'd play it again without the capo, so I said, sure! I'd love to see how those bar chords are coming!
Bleachers, How Dare You Want More:

A / / / | D / / /| F#m / / / | D / / / |

Ethan didn't use the charts I wrote out for him, which was unfortunate, but he worked on it and learned it this week, so that's good!
We added Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, and I sent him this chart:
https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/the-beatles/lucy-in-the-sky-with-diamonds-chords-1049325
He struggles with bar chords, and tries to avoid them, but I recommended he try to stretch himself with Bb and F.

We started out looking at Ethan's new trombone. Very nice!
We then tried to go over With a Little Help From My Friends, but Ethan had forgotten to look at this one.
Here's the chord sheet again:
https://www.guitartabs.cc/tabs/b/beatles/with_a_little_help_from_my_friends_tab.html
I'm going to send a better chord chart for you.
We then reviewed Lose Yourself to Dance again, by Daft Punk. He had some trouble remembering where to put the capo. Last time we did it with the capo on the 2nd fret.
He showed me a song he was writing using Finale. Great stuff, Ethan!
December 21st, 2021
Ethan added a song called Lose Yourself to Dance by Daft Punk. He played it through me, and then we talked about the chords etc.
We added With a Little Help from My Friends:
https://www.guitartabs.cc/tabs/b/beatles/with_a_little_help_from_my_friends_tab.html
This has a complex chord structure, and the tab I see online is not correct, but we can work with it.

We had some challenges with the zoom meeting this week - for some reason one of my mics was buzzing and I couldn't get my computer to recognize the other mic. Sorry!
He played through both songs (Get Lucky and Circle of Life), and did really well on them!
I asked him to come up with a new song and try to learn it on his own.

We reviewed Get Lucky, and ethan wanted to try it with a capo, so we put it on 2 and played it in A minor.
Am / / / | C / / / | Em / / / | D / / /
Then we added Elton John, Circle of Life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1KUxyNhHRE
We played in G with the capo on 3.
November 30th, 2021
Ethan played through Get Lucky for me - did really well, then showed me a top secret song... then showed me his own lyrics for I've Been Every Where Man.
We decided to try recording that in the studio next week!
November 23rd, 2021
We went over both of the Johnny Cash's songs last week, then added Daft Punk - Get Lucky
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5glDAaCaazc
I should say, this song has the following chord progression:
Bm / / / | D / / / | F#m / / / | E / / / |
We talked about different ways to play the B minor and the F#m to make it easier to switch around.
November 17th, 2021
We played through Won't Back Down together, and then Ethan showed me his new pedal.
We then looked at a new song to learn, and started with Johnny Cash, the Running Kind
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdi3AZZ3zas
and then Johnny Cash, I've Been Every Where Man

Ethan was frustrated with Tiny Dancer, so we went back to guitar, and tried to work on Long Time Running by the Hip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9Nl9wiGUXA
I realize more and more that Ethan isn't as much wanting to learn new songs, as he is in playing for me songs he already knows. He had trouble with this one, so he decided to try another one he knew, Fiddler's Green, also by the Hip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJglSuYGFvc
October 19th, 2021
Ethan played through while my guitar gently weeps, and did quite well on it. We've decided to add a song by Elton John, Tiny Dancer, and he wanted to learn it on the piano. I started showing him how to play it but it was a little complex for him so I wrote out a simple version.
October 12th, 2021
Ethan did really well on Wild Flowers, and was ready to work on a new song.
We decided to add The Beatles, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEMEAxlYL04
It's got some new chords for Ethan (C# minor) which he'd rather play a A major seventh (which works) and a D minor 7, which he's learning.
October 5th, 2021
Ethan worked on Wild Flowers this week on his own, and did it with the capo on the 5th then playing it in C.
It can also be capo'd on the third fret, and played in D.
We went through that a few times, (oh, and he also showed me his ukulele at the beginning of the lesson).
Please come with a song to work on next week.
September 28th, 2021
So this week we went over One Church Town again, and then added Josie by Glorious Sons.
Ethan already knew the basic chord structure, so we didn't really spend time on working on it, but he said next week he'd like to learn Wild Flowers by Tom Petty on guitar.
September 21st, 2021
I missed Ethan today in lessons - hope everything is okay!
September 14th, 2021
This was Ethan's first lesson in studio. We reviewed the new chords from last week, and played some grooves in context (rhythm and blues, jazz etc).
We then decided to work through a song, and he chose One Church Town by Glorious Sons:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVaNhtEoQHY
This uses a C# minor, which is like an A minor on the fourth fret.
It also has a little run on the E string.
Try to get that learned by next week! Looking forward to seeing you then!
September 7th, 2021
This was Ethan's first lesson. We decided to focus on learning new chords at the start. It's a good approach over Zoom anyway.
We started with A, and went through the chords up to G, focusing on the ones he didn't already know:
Asus, Amaj7, A7
Csus, Cmaj7, C7
etc.
We skipped B and F because they are bar chords, and Ethan was struggling with that. We'll come back to that next time.
