We reviewed closer, and tried working on the kick and snare beat WITHOUT high hat, and then decided to just leave it for now and so added Thriller by Michael Jackson:

We went through Circles a bunch of times and worked on the fills on the snare, followed by the crash. Felicia comes in just a bit late on the snare sometimes, and then later on the crash, so that throws her beat off some.

Felicia did really well on We Will Rock You! We added a Tom Petty song, "Free Fallin'" and it's got something a little different in the kick. We went over the new kick beat, as well as a few of the fills together, and did the song about three times.

Felicia came in feeling a bit discouraged with It's My Life -- (I'm sorry! I feel like I pushed you too fast!)
We found another one, which is a bit easier, but still maybe pushing her a little too hard.

Felcia did amazingly on Back In Black ( and she said she enjoyed it more ).
She loves Bon Jovi, so we tried her favourite first, "Have a Nice Day," but it was a tad too hard for now.

This is helpful for hearing little parts you might otherwise not have noticed, like the double kick thing every second measure.

Felicia nailed, NAILED, the Seven Nation Army. A couple little missteps here and there, but overall amazing.

This video is of a drummer playing along, and it helps to play with it on , so you can watch what he's doing and listen to how you're matching up.

Felicia worked out the fills we did last week, and had it nailed really well (every other bar even!).
We added beat three to the fill, with a higher tom, and she picked that up right away.
We then added a flam on beat 4, with a rest (no '4 and' after the flam. We then alternated between the first fill with the three, four, and the flam.

Today we continued with playing the kit, and doing the crash on one, and playing it every second time.
We added the floor tom on beat 4, followed by the crash. We did it every second time as well.
August 10th, 2021
This was Felicia's first lesson. We started out with the names of the various drum parts, (kick, snare, crash, ride, hi hat, tom toms, floor tom).
We then learned a quarter note beat, in which the hi hat just plays quarters (1, 2, 3, 4).
There was a bit of speeding up, so I encouraged her to think of smaller divisions-- to count the "ands" between each of the 1, 2, 3, 4, so that slower beats don't lose time in the empty spaces.
She had learned an 8th note beat on Youtube (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and on the hi hat), so we switched right to that.
We tried adding a crash on the 1, which was a little challenging, so we returned to the quarter note beat, and added crash on 1 for that.
Very good first lesson, she's got a natural ability.
